Lake Erie Shipwreck: Rare Winds Unveil Long-Lost Vessel Near Kingsville, Ontario
A remarkable blend of extreme weather and hidden history recently captivated observers on Lake Erie, as powerful winds caused a unique phenomenon, temporarily revealing a long-lost Lake Erie shipwreck near Kingsville, Ontario.
The Vanishing Lake: A Weather Phenomenon Unfolds
The dramatic event began when intense southwest winds, part of a deep low-pressure system sweeping across the Great Lakes region, pushed water from Lake Erie’s western basin towards its eastern side. This created an extraordinary effect, causing water levels near the Canadian town of Kingsville to drop by several feet, making the lake appear to “vanish.” The sudden retreat of the water exposed parts of the lakebed that haven’t been seen in decades, if not centuries.
Meteorologists describe this as a seiche-like event, where strong pressure gradients produced sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. David Marsalek, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland, noted the intensity, stating it was one of the strongest in a while, capable of displacing 3 to 4 feet of water. While the water displacement was significant, the slow return prevented it from becoming a true oscillating seiche.
A Historic Discovery: The Kingsville Shipwreck Emerges
Amidst the temporarily exposed lakebed, an incredible sight emerged: the top of a sunken vessel, resting just a few hundred yards off the Kingsville coast. Diver Matt Vermette, a self-proclaimed ‘ship junkie,’ was among the first to witness this rare spectacle. “Not an active ship, but this lady showed up a couple hundred yards from shore in Kingsville, ON. Thanks to the wind, I got to see a shipwreck without my drysuit today,” Vermette shared, capturing compelling video and photos of the discovery.

Historians, based on initial findings and archival research, believe the discovered vessel may be the Demming. Newspaper archives dating back before the 1900s document its unfortunate fate, adding a layer of historical intrigue to this modern rediscovery. This particular Great Lakes shipwreck offers a tangible link to the region’s rich maritime past.
Social Media Ablaze: A Community’s Fascination
The unusual weather phenomenon and the subsequent revealing of the Lake Erie shipwreck quickly became a viral sensation. Locals and meteorologists alike flooded social media platforms with stunning images and videos of the temporary lakebed, highlighting the dramatic impact of the winds. The sight of the lake seemingly disappearing, coupled with the sudden appearance of a historical artifact, sparked widespread fascination and discussion across both Canadian and U.S. communities bordering the Great Lakes.
This event serves as a powerful reminder of the dynamic nature of our environment and the hidden wonders that lie beneath the surface, waiting for the right conditions to reveal themselves. For a brief moment, the waters of Lake Erie offered a window into a bygone era, allowing us to connect with a piece of maritime history that has long rested in its cold embrace.
