Braves Roster Decisions: Didier Fuentes Impresses, Veterans Re-Sign

NORTH PORT, Fla. – The Atlanta Braves are finalizing their roster for Opening Day, and several key decisions made on Saturday have significantly altered the landscape of the team. A particularly exciting development is the surge in prospect Didier Fuentes’ chances of making the team, alongside the re-signing of veteran pitcher Martín Pérez.

Fuentes Makes a Strong Case

Didier Fuentes (Braves No. 3 prospect) has been turning heads this spring, and his performance has clearly resonated with the coaching staff. The 20-year-old phenom has been nearly untouchable, retiring the last 26 batters he’s faced. His spring training stats are remarkable: after hitting the first batter he faced, he’s pitched nine innings without allowing a hit or walk, striking out an astounding 17 of the last 26 batters.

“He certainly has made his point,” Braves manager Walt Weiss stated, acknowledging Fuentes’ compelling case for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Fuentes now finds himself in a head-to-head competition with José Suarez for what are likely the final two pitching spots.

Veteran Stability with Pérez, Smith, and Farmer

In addition to Fuentes’ emergence, the Braves have secured the services of veteran pitcher Martín Pérez, who agreed to remain with the organization despite not being guaranteed a roster spot. This provides valuable depth and experience to the pitching staff.

The Braves also announced one-year split contracts with infielders Dominic Smith and Kyle Farmer, both of whom were XX(B) free agents. These signings offer flexibility, as the Braves could potentially send either player to Triple-A Gwinnett if they acquire a more suitable roster fit before Wednesday’s roster deadline. However, both veterans have the option to elect free agency if demoted.

Potential Roles for Smith and Farmer

Dominic Smith is positioned as a strong candidate to serve as Atlanta’s designated hitter against right-handed starting pitchers, particularly when Drake Baldwin is catching. Kyle Farmer could fill the same role against left-handed starters. While Farmer securing a spot with his hometown team would be a heartwarming story, the focus remains on Fuentes’ exceptional performance.

Projected Starting Rotation

The Braves’ starting rotation is expected to consist of Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Reynaldo López, Grant Holmes, and Bryce Elder. However, with a demanding early-season schedule – 13 games in 13 days – a sixth starter may be required. Both Fuentes and Suarez are in contention to fill that role, or to serve as long relievers.

The Braves are clearly building a team with a blend of experienced veterans and exciting young talent. The coming days will be crucial as they finalize their roster and prepare for the start of the season. For more information on the Braves and MLB, visit MLB.com/Braves and ESPN’s Braves page.
