As reported by The New York Times, Universal has announced that its upcoming film slate will enjoy theatrical exclusivity for at least five weekends in 2026, expanding to seven weekends in 2027. This is a significant change from the pandemic-era window of just three weeks, demonstrating a renewed prioritization of the theatrical experience before films become available on Video on Demand and streaming platforms. This decision will benefit not only The Odyssey but also other highly anticipated projects like Shrek 5, the live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, and Minions & Monsters.
Donna Langley, Chairwoman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, stated, “Our windowing strategy has always been designed to evolve with the marketplace, but we firmly believe in the primacy of theatrical exclusivity and working closely with our exhibition partners to support a healthy, sustainable theatrical ecosystem.”
The Odyssey: A Cinematic Journey
The Odyssey promises to be an epic adaptation of Homer’s classic tale, following Odysseus (Damon)’s decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. The recently released trailer has generated considerable excitement, showcasing the film’s scope and action.
