Jets vs. Penguins: A Battle for Playoff Positioning
PITTSBURGH – The Winnipeg Jets (28-29-11) are looking to continue their recent success against Central Division rivals as they head into a crucial matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins (34-18-16). This afternoon’s game, set for 12:00 pm CT and broadcast on TSN and 680 CJOB/Power 97, presents an opportunity for the Jets to sweep the season series, having previously defeated the Penguins 5-2 in November.
Jets Seek Consistency After Boston Setback
Following a pair of afternoon victories against divisional opponents last weekend, the Jets aim to replicate that success on this three-game road trip. However, Thursday’s 6-1 loss in Boston highlighted areas needing improvement. Forward Cole Koepke emphasized the importance of playing as a cohesive unit of five in all zones. “We were a little bit inconsistent about what we were doing and working within a structure of five at times,” Koepke stated after Friday’s optional practice. “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but the standings are so close and we have to flush it. We have two games back-to-back here.”
Focusing on Chance Creation, Not Just Results
While the Jets generated a significant number of high-danger chances in Boston (13-8, according to Natural Stat Trick), capitalizing on those opportunities proved elusive. Koepke stressed the importance of focusing on *how* those chances were created, rather than dwelling on the missed opportunities. “We were ending plays quickly in our own zone, we were quick to support one another. We were defending as a group of five and from there transitioning quick,” he explained. “Ending plays early, you have so much more energy to go on offence. That’s where those looks came from, we just need to do that for a full game.”
Penguins Welcome Back Captain Crosby
The Penguins, coming off a thrilling 6-5 overtime loss to Carolina, will welcome back captain Sidney Crosby after an 11-game absence due to an injury sustained at the 2026 Olympic Games. Crosby made an immediate impact in his return, contributing a goal and an assist. The Penguins’ recent game also revealed vulnerabilities, conceding two goals on rush plays at even strength and a shorthanded breakaway.
Koepke acknowledged Crosby’s pivotal role in the Penguins’ offense. “He starts everything for their team. It seems to go through him and revolve around him. He’s obviously a world class player,” he said. “They’re in the heat of it as well, they’re having a good season. We have to make sure we’re ready. Come out with a game plan and it’s probably going to be a playoff like game here on out from our side. We’re playing teams that are also in the mix, so we expect that both ways.”
Pionk Potentially Returns to Jets Lineup
Jets fans received encouraging news with defenseman Neal Pionk participating in the optional skate. Pionk has been sidelined for the past 23 games with multiple injuries, including a lower-body injury and a subsequent undisclosed injury. Head coach Scott Arniel indicated that Pionk could be available as early as this weekend.
Puck drop is scheduled for noon CT. This game promises to be a tightly contested battle with significant implications for both teams’ playoff aspirations. For more in-depth NHL coverage, visit NHL.com.
