Bryson DeChambeau: A Fan Favorite at LIV Golf South Africa
JOHANNESBURG – It wasn’t simply the number of autographs Bryson DeChambeau signed on Thursday evening that was remarkable; it was the promise he made to sign for every single fan. After sharing the lead in the first round of LIV Golf South Africa, DeChambeau announced he’d dedicate time to his supporters. And dedicate he did. For over 30 minutes after leaving the press conference, a massive crowd remained, eager for a moment with the star.
Children peered through fence gaps, and fans climbed onto platforms, all vying for a closer look. DeChambeau enjoys signing autographs – he says it “re-energizes” him – but this session stood out for the sheer variety of items presented. Gloves, hats, and flags were common, but fans also offered umbrellas, umbrella cases, backpacks, even shoes and shirts for his signature.

LIV Golf’s Success in South Africa: A Testament to Demand
DeChambeau understands the promotional landscape of professional golf. Tournaments often promise greatness, boasting headliner courses or star-studded fields. Some events sell out, while others, despite extensive hype, fall short. LIV Golf has experienced both successes and challenges in different locations over the past four years.
For months, LIV promoters have positioned their inaugural African event as something special. And the demand has been undeniable. Ticket sales have rivaled only LIV’s most popular event in Australia. Adding a surprise 18-hole bonus further boosted sales, and LIV has now moved a staggering 90,000 tickets for the South Africa stop. While official attendance figures will be released later, Thursday’s event was clearly a hit, with fans enthusiastically following DeChambeau and Louis Oosthuizen.
A Proud Moment for South African Golf
The atmosphere was particularly electric for local hero Louis Oosthuizen, captain of the all-South African Southern Guards team. Oosthuizen’s tee shot drew an emotional response from his teammate Charl Schwartzel, who was visibly moved by the crowd’s support.
“Me and Charl [Schwartzel] just stood there talking a little bit, and I was there watching his tee shot,” Oosthuizen said after the round. “I was tearing up a little bit. I put my glasses on because I felt so proud, and then Charl just said he felt the same way.”
Schwartzel added, “Very few times you get to experience in your career where your hair stands up and you get these needles going through your body. I was walking up there [on the first tee], and it was just so loud, and I started tearing up. I was like, Wow, I need to hit a tee shot but I’m busy crying.”
Dean Burmester, another Southern Guards team member, echoed these sentiments. The team is currently leading the team competition by one stroke, and their general manager, Richard Glover, has promised a massive celebration should they secure the win.
