Alabama Student Found Dead in Barcelona: James ‘Jimmy’ Gracey’s Tragic Story
BARCELONA, Spain (WBRC) – The University of Alabama community is mourning the loss of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a student who was found dead in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this week. Gracey, 20, had been visiting friends during spring break when he went missing.
The Disappearance and Search
According to reports, Gracey was last seen with friends around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17th, at a popular nightclub frequented by tourists. His aunt, Beth Marren O’Reilly, stated that he became separated from his group at the club. Roommates alerted authorities when he failed to return to their Airbnb.
Body Recovered and Initial Findings
After a two-day search, Spanish authorities confirmed the recovery of Gracey’s body from the sea near Barcelona’s Somorrostro area on Thursday. Initial investigations, as reported by El Periódico de Catalunya, suggest a tragic accident. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Gracey falling into the sea from the breakwater between Somorrostro Beach and Port Olímpic.
The footage depicts Gracey initially engaged in conversation, but later shows him “walking alone” towards the water. While drowning is suspected, the body also exhibited bruises consistent with impact against rocks. A forensic examination is underway to determine if any trauma occurred before the fall.
Family Statement and Grief
The Gracey family released a statement expressing their profound grief: “Our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world – so many helped to share Jimmy’s story and bring his life to light- so that others may know him.”
They have requested privacy during this difficult time, adding, “We are so grateful for the kindness and concern that has been shown for our family during this incredibly difficult time. We have made the decision to pause media interviews at this time to focus on being together and caring for one another. Thank you for respecting our privacy and holding our family in your thoughts and prayers. We will share updates if and when we’re able.”
University of Alabama Responds
The University of Alabama also issued a statement of condolence: “The University of Alabama community is heartbroken to learn of the death of Jimmy Gracey. Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our condolences are with the Gracey family during this devastating time.”
The university is providing support to the family, friends, and classmates affected by the tragedy. Counseling and support resources are available to students by calling UAPD at 205-348-5454, and to other members of the UA community via the Employee Assistance Program at 888-283-3515.
Ongoing Investigation and Repatriation
The Gracey family is currently in Barcelona awaiting judicial authorization to return Jimmy’s body to the United States for burial in Elmhurst, Alabama, his birthplace.
