Jeopardy! Contestant’s Daring Wager Pays Off in Thrilling Victory

Go big or go home… and in this case, a Jeopardy! contestant certainly went big! Jamie Ding, a law student from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, proved that sometimes, a high-risk strategy can lead to a high-reward outcome. His recent performance on the show has captivated fans, showcasing not only his knowledge but also his willingness to take chances.

A Second Chance at Victory

Ding returned for his second game on Monday, March 16th, already boasting a one-day total of $22,633. He faced off against Shannon Thomas, a nonprofit professional from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Andrew Ford, a data scientist from Madison, Wisconsin. The stage was set for another round of intense competition.

Early Game Dynamics

The initial stages of the game saw a tight contest, with Ford quickly establishing a lead. He successfully found a Daily Double on clue eight in the “Board Games” category, correctly identifying “Life” after the clue: “The times they were a’changin’: By 1999, Hasbro changed this game’s pink-and-blue-peg-holding station wagons to minivans.” This doubled his score to $4,800. Meanwhile, Ding struggled early, starting with $0, while Thomas found herself in negative territory.

Ding Dominates and a Risky Gamble

However, Ding quickly turned the tables, dominating the game after the first 15 clues and amassing $4,000, compared to Ford’s $5,400. Thomas remained at -$2,000. By the end of the first round, Ding had surged into the lead with $8,400, followed by Ford with $5,600 and Thomas with $1,200.

The Double Jeopardy round brought even more excitement. Ding found the first Daily Double on clue five, giving him a lead of $11,200. He then made a significant wager of $3,600 on a clue in “Historical Statements”: “According to Suetonius, Caesar uttered this phrase as he took a big gamble & crossed the Rubicon.” Ding correctly answered, “What is the die is cast (alea iacta est)?” increasing his total to $14,800.

Later, Ford found the last Daily Double but unfortunately missed the clue in “Habits Unbecoming”: “Add 2 letters to a word for ‘loitering’ to get this word for faking an illness to get out of work.” His incorrect response dropped him to $2,000, while Ding ended the round with an impressive $34,000.

Final Jeopardy and a Stunning Wager

Thomas was unable to participate in Final Jeopardy due to a negative score of -$800. The category for Final Jeopardy was “20th Century Novels,” and the clue read: “One of its epigraphs from Genesis 30, about Leah, Rachel, & Rachel’s servant, Bilhah.”

Neither contestant correctly identified The Handmaid’s Tale. Ford wagered $718, bringing his total to $882. However, it was Ding’s audacious wager that stole the show. He bet a staggering $30,067, answering “What is Song of Solomon?” Despite the enormous risk, Ding emerged victorious with $3,933, securing a two-day total of $26,566!

Fan Reactions and What’s Next

The bold wager sparked a flurry of reactions on Reddit. Fans debated the strategy, with some questioning Ding’s decision while others praised his confidence. “Jamie tried to get greedy here, and it cost him,” one fan commented, while another lauded his “Latin phrasing.”

Ding will return on Tuesday for game three, continuing his impressive run on Jeopardy!. You can catch Jeopardy! weekdays, check local listings, and stream next day on Hulu and Peacock.
