KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The East Tennessee community is mourning the loss of Matt Hinkin, former chief meteorologist for WATE 6 On Your Side, who passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 62. For over three decades, Matt Hinkin was a familiar and trusted face in homes across the region, guiding viewers through countless weather events and becoming a beloved personality.

A 30+ Year Career Dedicated to Serving East Tennessee

Matt joined WATE in 1990, bringing with him experience from stations in Missouri and Kansas. Over 31 years with the station, he became synonymous with accurate forecasting and a reassuring presence during severe weather. From the historic blizzard of ’93 to the devastating Gatlinburg wildfires, Matt Hinkin was there, providing critical information and keeping the community informed. WATE 6 stated, “Over the span of 31 years with WATE, Matt saw us through storms like the blizzard of ’93 and disasters like the Gatlinburg wildfires. He will be greatly missed.”

A Courageous Battle with Parkinson’s Disease

Matt retired from television in 2021 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. However, his commitment to serving others didn’t end with his retirement. He bravely shared his health journey with the public, aiming to raise awareness about Parkinson’s and offer support to those also living with the condition. His openness and vulnerability inspired many.

Remembered for Kindness and Grace

WATE anchor Lori Tucker, who worked alongside Matt for many years, shared the news with viewers during the noon newscast. She described him as someone who naturally drew people in, noting that she frequently received inquiries about him even after his retirement. “Matt just had a way about him that drew people to him, and that’s why I have someone, many of you, asking me about him nearly every day,” Tucker shared.

Tucker also highlighted the personal hardships Matt faced, including the loss of his beloved wife, Deb, in 2020. Despite these challenges and his declining health, Matt continued to advocate for those battling Parkinson’s, doing so with remarkable grace and joy. “And despite his declining health, Matt kept advocating for people facing Parkinson’s. He did it all with grace and joy, and that is how we will remember our friend, Matt Hinkin.”
