Pont Pierre Laporte: Wind Mitigation Measures in Place – Traffic Updates

The Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) has implemented measures to mitigate the impact of strong winds on traffic flow across the Pont Pierre Laporte. These proactive steps are designed to ensure the safety of motorists during periods of high wind.

Phases of Wind Mitigation

The MTQ’s response is being rolled out in four phases. The initial phase, launched early Tuesday morning, involved public awareness messaging displayed on signage near the bridge. As of late morning, Phase 2 was underway.

“Currently, Phase 2 involves closing the outer lanes in both directions to reduce the impact of wind on vehicles,” explained Roxanne Pellerin, MTQ’s regional spokesperson. “There are also patrol units circulating on the bridge to encourage drivers to reduce their speed.”

Addressing Public Concerns

Some drivers expressed concerns about a potential complete closure of the bridge following the implementation of Phases 1 and 2. The MTQ is working to reassure the public.

“We are only in Phase 2 of 4, and we are experiencing some of the strongest winds this morning, so a complete closure is far from likely,” Pellerin stated. “The final stage of the operation does not involve closing the bridge; it’s not even being considered.”

Phases 3 & 4: Continued Monitoring and Restrictions

Phases 3 and 4 focus on increasing the number of patrol units and, as a last resort, restricting access for heavy vehicles. “It’s important to understand that reaching Phase 4 is rare. We often remain in Phase 2, taking a preventative approach,” Pellerin concluded.

Recent Incidents

Last weekend, falling ice from the bridge structure led to the closure of two of the four lanes. Several drivers reported significant damage to their vehicles as a result. For more information on road conditions in Quebec, visit the Quebec 511 website.

The MTQ continues to monitor conditions closely and will adjust its response as needed to prioritize public safety on the Pont Pierre Laporte.
