‘Scared to Death’ Faces Box Office Horror: A Record-Breaking Debut
The horror-comedy ‘Scared to Death’ has unfortunately become a cautionary tale in the world of film distribution, experiencing a truly terrifying box office haul during its opening weekend. The film, which follows a production assistant (Olivier Paris) who suggests a real séance on a horror movie set – with predictably disastrous consequences – features genre veterans Lin Shaye (known for ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and the ‘Insidious’ franchise) and Bill Moseley (‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2’, ‘House of 1000 Corpses’), alongside Rae Dawn Chong (‘The Color Purple’, ‘Commando’). Despite this impressive cast, the film’s debut was anything but a success.
A Record-Low Per-Screen Average
According to Box Office Mojo, ‘Scared to Death’ debuted at No. 37 on the domestic chart for the weekend of March 13, earning a meager $21,550 from 184 theaters. While limited releases often generate lower numbers than wide releases, ‘Scared to Death’s’ per-screen average of just $117 is the lowest of all time for a new release.
This unfortunate record previously belonged to the 2025 horror film ‘Jimmy and Stiggs,’ which managed a per-screen average of $125. ‘Scared to Death’ now holds the eighth-worst debut per-screen average in cinematic history, trailing only re-releases of films like ‘Groundhog Day’ (2021 – $100), ‘Frozen’ (2020 – $87), ‘The Star’ (2019 – $69), ‘On the Basis of Sex’ (2020 – $67), ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ (2025 – $43), ‘RBG’ (2020 – $38), and ‘Trainwreck’ (2025 – $16).
A Trend of Unpredictable Openings
The film’s performance continues a recent trend of unpredictable box office openings in the 2020s, sometimes resulting in record lows. In fact, nine of the ten lowest debut per-screen averages for new releases have occurred between 2020 and now. This means ‘Scared to Death’ has finally knocked the infamous children’s movie flop, ‘The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure,’ out of the all-time Bottom 10 – a spot it had held since its 2012 debut with a per-screen average of $205.
The New Bottom 10: Worst Per-Screen Averages
- #8 Scared to Death (2026) – $117
- #9 Jimmy and Stiggs (2025) – $125
- #12 King Ivory (2025) – $131
- #17 A Mouthful of Air (2021) – $160
- #19 The Kid Detective (2020) – $162
- #20 Yellow Rose (2020) – $167
- #21 Violent Ends (2025) – $168
- #23 Proud American (2008) – $180
- #27 Inheritance (2025) – $199
- #28 Buffalo Kids (2026) – $203
Looking Beyond the Theatrical Release
Despite this unfortunate record, the success of ‘Scared to Death’ may not hinge on its theatrical performance. The film had a limited release during Oscars weekend, a traditionally slow period for moviegoing as many viewers stay home for the awards telecast. Therefore, its fate likely rests on its performance in streaming and Video on Demand (VOD) platforms. The future of the film may be found in digital distribution rather than box office receipts.
