FPL Captaincy Picks: Gameweek 30 – Pedro, Fernandes, or Haaland?

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community is buzzing with debate: who should wear the armband in Gameweek 30? While Erling Haaland (£14.6m) remains a popular choice, recent form and fixtures suggest that Joao Pedro (£7.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.1m) could significantly outperform the Manchester City striker.

The Rise of Pedro and Fernandes

Both Chelsea’s Joao Pedro and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes are enjoying a resurgence in form, largely attributed to the recent managerial changes at their respective clubs. Since Gameweek 22, they’ve been the top-scoring players in Fantasy, racking up 76 and 60 points respectively – significantly eclipsing Haaland’s 32 points over the same period.

Joao Pedro has been remarkably consistent under Liam Rosenior, blanking only once (against league leaders Arsenal) and delivering eight goals and six assists for a total of 76 points. Fernandes, meanwhile, has nearly doubled Haaland’s points tally in the last eight Gameweeks.

Beyond Haaland: Emerging Contenders

Cole Palmer (£10.6m), also benefiting from Rosenior’s impact, is the third-highest scorer during this run, averaging an impressive 8.0 points per match. Interestingly, Antoine Semenyo (£8.3m) has actually outperformed Haaland since joining his team ahead of Gameweek 22, gaining 20 more points than the City striker and playing in a more advanced role in recent matches.

Big Chance Involvement: A Key Metric

A closer look at ‘big chance’ involvement – situations where a player is expected to score – reveals why Pedro and Fernandes are thriving. Joao Pedro leads the league with 14 big chances over the last eight Gameweeks, alongside a league-topping 25 shots in the box. Fernandes isn’t far behind, with 14 big chance involvements, but his strength lies in creativity, providing 11 big chances for his teammates – twice as many as Haaland and Semenyo combined.

Defensive Vulnerabilities: Fixture Analysis

The defensive data further strengthens the case for Pedro, Fernandes, and even Hugo Ekitike (£9.2m). Tottenham has conceded the most goals (11) and big chances (15) in their last four matches, making Ekitike a strong contender at home. Chelsea’s opponents, Newcastle, and Manchester United’s opponents, Aston Villa, also show defensive weaknesses, offering opportunities for Pedro and Fernandes to capitalize.

The Verdict: Fernandes as Captain?

While all three players – Fernandes, Joao Pedro, and Ekitike – appear likely to outscore Haaland, whose potential has been impacted by Manchester City’s formation change, Fernandes emerges as the most reliable captaincy pick. He boasts more double-figure hauls (seven) than Ekitike and Joao Pedro combined, and has only blanked in three of his 12 home outings this season.

Joao Pedro’s recent form is impressive, but Ekitike carries the highest risk due to his inconsistency. Fernandes’ consistent home performances and creative output make him the standout choice for Gameweek 30.
