WSFA Weather Update: Enhanced Risk of Severe Storms
DOTHAN, Ala. – Residents across Southeast Alabama, portions of Southwest Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle are bracing for a significant weather event. The National Weather Service has upgraded the region to an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms overnight. This heightened alert signals a considerably increased threat of dangerous weather conditions.
What to Expect: Tornadoes, Hail & Damaging Winds
According to the Coffee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the primary concern is a heightened risk of tornadoes. In addition to the potential for twisters, large hail and damaging wind gusts are also expected. The timing of the storms remains largely consistent with previous forecasts: the earliest impacts are anticipated around 3 a.m. CT, with the most likely arrival window between 4-7 a.m. CT.
Grant Lyons, Director of the Coffee County EMA, explained the situation: “A powerful squall line will rapidly move through our region overnight. This line carries the potential for destructive wind gusts and a few isolated, brief embedded tornadoes. Should any supercell thunderstorms develop ahead of the squall line, the risk increases for stronger tornadoes and larger hail.”
Staying Informed & Safe
Here’s what you need to know to stay safe:
- Enhanced Risk: This means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.
- Timing: Expect the worst weather between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. CT.
- Squall Line: The main threat will be a fast-moving squall line with damaging winds and potential for brief tornadoes.
- Supercells: The development of supercell thunderstorms could lead to stronger, longer-lasting tornadoes.
