Power Outage Near Me: San Antonio Grapples with Widespread Blackouts
SAN ANTONIO, TX – A powerful cold front swept through San Antonio overnight, bringing with it strong winds that triggered widespread power outages across the city. Tens of thousands of residents were left in the dark as the storm reached its peak.
Extent of the Outages
CPS Energy reported nearly 200 separate outages overnight, impacting approximately 40,000 customers throughout San Antonio. As of 4:00 AM Monday, crews had made significant progress, reducing the number of active outages to around 90, affecting over 10,500 customers.
The hardest-hit areas appear to be on the city’s west side, near Loop 1604, including neighborhoods like San Antonio Creekside, Rolling Oaks Estates, and Big Country. Clusters of outages were also reported on the southwest side, in the vicinity of Palo Alto College.
Challenges to Restoration
Strong winds pose a significant challenge to restoration efforts. According to CPS Energy officials, wind speeds exceeding 25 mph can force crews to halt the use of bucket trucks, requiring them to climb poles – a slower and more dangerous process. This naturally extends the time it takes to restore power.
Safety Precautions & CPS Energy’s Advice
CPS Energy is strongly urging residents to prioritize safety during this time:
- Stay Away from Downed Power Lines: Treat all downed lines as if they are energized and extremely dangerous.
- Avoid Driving Over Fallen Lines: Never drive over downed power lines.
- Secure Loose Outdoor Items: Secure any loose outdoor objects that could be blown into power equipment.
Crews are continuing to work diligently to restore service as conditions permit. You can view the latest outage map and find updates on the CPS Energy website. Staying informed is crucial during these events.
