Eid ul Fitr 2026: When Will the Celebrations Begin?
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches its conclusion, anticipation for Eid ul Fitr 2026 is building. This auspicious festival, celebrated by Muslims worldwide, marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal. Determining the exact date of Eid is traditionally based on the sighting of the new moon, making precise predictions challenging.
Understanding the Date Variations
Eid al-Fitr isn’t observed on the same day globally, primarily due to differing time zones and the visibility of the crescent moon. For example, countries in the Gulf region, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, often celebrate Eid a day earlier than nations like India, Pakistan, and others in Asia. This is because the new moon is visible at different times across the Earth.
Predictions for 2026: India, Saudi Arabia & UAE
According to the International Astronomical Centre, if the new moon is sighted in Saudi Arabia on March 18, 2026, Eid ul Fitr will likely be celebrated on March 19th, following 29 days of fasting. However, if the moon remains unseen on March 18th, Ramadan will extend to 30 days, shifting the celebration to March 20th.
The Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory in the UAE has released images to aid in determining the visibility of the Shawwal Crescent, helping to clarify the timing of Eid and conclude Ramadan 1447 AH. Initial estimates suggest that Eid al-Fitr may be celebrated on March 20th in India, where Ramadan is expected to begin on February 19th, 2026.
The Significance of Eid ul Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is a time for joyous gatherings with family and friends, sharing festive meals, and exchanging gifts. It’s also a tradition to offer special gifts to those in need. Fasting during Ramadan is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making Eid a deeply significant occasion for Muslims around the world.
In India, the crescent moon is anticipated to be sighted on March 19th, after 29 days of fasting. However, the final date remains contingent on the actual moon sighting. Should the moon not be visible on March 19th, the festival will be observed on March 21st.
Saudi Arabia’s Eid Holiday
Saudi Arabia has announced a four-day holiday for all workers in the public and private sectors to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, commencing on March 18th, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan. In both Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Eid celebrations are expected to begin on March 19th, dependent on the moon sighting.
