Filming in South Africa & The Pursuit of Bulletproof Fitness
Much of One Piece Season 2 was filmed across various locations in South Africa, immersing Skylar in the world of the Grand Line. With a significant increase in fight scenes, Skylar spent months working closely with professional stunt performers, adopting exercises that directly mirrored the action on screen. His goal? To become as resilient and injury-proof as possible.
“I’m training to be as bulletproof and injury-proof as I can and I’m trying to keep everything in my training simple enough that I can do it any place I am,” Skylar shared with Men’s Health. This led to the development of workouts that could be performed anywhere, anytime – crucial when filming on location in deserts or studio lots.
Mastering the Black Leg Style
Sanji’s fighting style is unique: a powerful, explosive technique focused entirely on leg movements, deliberately avoiding the use of hands. To authentically portray this, Skylar incorporated a diverse training regimen. This included a blend of cardio, kettlebell exercises, and martial arts, all designed to build the necessary flexibility, power, and speed.
The results are evident in the high-speed kicks that helped defeat Baroque Works agents this season. And while he has a skilled stunt double, Skylar strives to perform as many of his own stunts as possible, matching the double’s precision and power.
Skylar’s Workout Philosophy
Skylar’s approach isn’t about complicated routines or gym intimidation. It’s about sustainable, adaptable fitness. He emphasizes “exercise snacking” – fitting in short bursts of activity throughout the day – and even gives his workouts creative names to keep things engaging.
