Key Shifts in the Rankings

The gap between the top and bottom ten passports remains narrow, with only 13 visa-free destinations separating them. The United Arab Emirates has experienced a remarkable jump, now tied with Japan and South Korea for second place. Malaysia has also seen significant gains, moving from ninth to sixth. Sweden now stands alone in third place, while other previously shared rankings have shifted.

What Drives the Rankings?

The Henley Passport Index assesses passport strength based on the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa. Data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), supplemented by Henley & Partners’ research and publicly available information. The index evaluates 199 passports against 227 destinations and is updated monthly.

Canada’s Recent Gains: Visa-Free Access to China

Canada’s improved ranking in March 2026 was largely due to the introduction of visa-free entry to China for Canadian passport holders. Effective February 17, 2026, Canadians can travel to China for up to 30 days for tourism, business, or personal visits without a visa. This policy is currently in effect until at least December 31, 2026. This new access has increased the number of visa-free destinations for Canadians from 181 to 182.
