The Annual Spectacle: Chicago River Dyeing for St. Patrick’s Day
One of Chicago’s most beloved and visually stunning traditions is just around the corner: the annual Chicago River Dyeing for St. Patrick’s Day! This iconic event transforms the heart of the city into a vibrant display of Irish spirit. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, here’s everything you need to know to experience the magic.
When and Where to Watch the Chicago River Dyeing
The dyeing of the Chicago River takes place on Saturday, March 14th. The process typically begins around 10:00 a.m. CT, lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour. City officials recommend arriving early to secure the best viewing spot.
The dyeing occurs between the Columbus Bridge (west) and Orleans Street (east), before Wolf Point. Spectators can enjoy the view along Upper Wacker Drive, with prime locations between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.
What to Expect: A Tradition Explained
The tradition dates back to 1961, initially as a way to detect illegal sewage dumping. Today, it’s a cherished celebration. Members of the Chicago Plumbers Union, aboard boats, utilize a special, eco-friendly dye that’s initially orange but transforms into a brilliant green upon contact with the water.
While the initial vibrant green hue lasts only a few hours, the Chicago River will retain a shade of green for some time afterward, gradually fading over the following days. Choose Chicago provides more details on the event’s history and impact.
Beyond the Dye: St. Patrick’s Day Parades
The St. Patrick’s Day festivities extend beyond the river dyeing. Chicago hosts several parades:
- Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Saturday, March 14th, starting at 12:15 p.m. at Balbo and Columbus Drive, heading north to Monroe Street.
- South Side Irish Parade: Sunday, March 15th, beginning at noon from West 103rd Street and Western Avenue.
- Northwest Side Irish Parade: Sunday, March 15th, starting at noon from North Neola Avenue and West Raven Street.
The South Side Irish Parade is recognized as the largest community-based St. Patrick’s Day Parade outside of Dublin, Ireland.
