Honoring Lou Gehrig: Phi Delta Theta’s Fight Against ALS with Phi-athlon
Across the nation, Phi Delta Theta chapters are intensifying their commitment to combating Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, through unwavering support for the Live Like Lou Foundation. The fraternity’s members impressively raised $2.3 million for vital ALS research and family support during the 2023–25 biennium, and are aiming to surpass that impact in the 2025–27 biennium.
Introducing Phi-athlon: A New Way to Make a Difference
Now, there’s an exciting new avenue for chapters to galvanize their campuses, promote personal wellness, and raise significant funds for this crucial cause: Phi-athlon. This cause-based fitness event is designed to unite students around a powerful shared mission – to leave ALS better than they found it.
Hosted by a Phi Delta Theta chapter at a campus gym or outdoor track, Phi-athlon challenges participants to complete a specially designed workout. The workout itself is a tribute to the legendary Lou Gehrig, whose unwavering spirit continues to inspire the fraternity’s dedication to ALS awareness and research.
The Workout: A Tribute to Number 44
The number 44 holds special significance, honoring Lou Gehrig’s iconic jersey number. Participants register through a dedicated online event page, fundraise individually, and then tackle the workout in a fun and competitive atmosphere.
Why Phi-athlon?
Phi-athlon is engineered to simplify philanthropy event hosting. It provides a ready-to-implement framework complete with built-in resources and support. This makes it ideal for chapters without an existing annual philanthropy event, or those seeking a fresh way to connect with their campus community.
- Simple to Organize: Streamlined planning and execution.
- Scalable to Any Campus: Adaptable to various campus sizes and facilities.
- Comprehensive Support: Access to marketing materials, registration tools, and event guidance.
Early adoption of Phi-athlon has been enthusiastic, with several chapters and members already hosting successful events. As the movement gains momentum, more campuses are joining the effort to raise awareness and critical funding.
Get Involved and Support the Cause

Achieving the Triple Crown
Phi-athlon also provides a pathway for members striving for the Fraternity’s prestigious Triple Crown recognition. Brothers who raise $444 or more through Phi-athlon fundraising will make significant progress towards achieving this milestone.
