Billy Joel: A Daughter’s Tribute and a Father’s Resilience

Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of the legendary Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, is preparing to honor her father at Thursday’s tribute event, “The Music of Billy Joel.” The event, a fundraiser organized by promoter Michael Dorf, will feature a stellar lineup of artists at New York’s Carnegie Hall, all paying homage to Billy Joel’s decades-long career.

A Childhood Filled with Music

Growing up, Alexa Ray’s life was immersed in music. She fondly recalls childhood days spent performing Disney musicals with her father, who would accompany her on the piano. “We were three theater music nerds putting on musicals around the house,” she shares with The Hollywood Reporter. “I would play the characters, and Dad would accompany me. Ever since I was born, it was music, music, music. He would also sing to me while I sat on the piano.”

A Tribute Amidst Health Challenges

This tribute takes on added significance as Billy Joel continues to navigate a health challenge – Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological condition affecting balance, vision, and hearing. He announced the cancellation of tour dates in May 2025 after being diagnosed. Despite this, Alexa Ray beams with pride at her father’s proactive approach to his health.

“He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet,” she says. “I’m so proud of him. He’s such a trooper, so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive. He’s a fighter. He’s always been a fighter and talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight.”

A Full-Circle Moment at Carnegie Hall

Alexa Ray was instrumental in ensuring her father’s attendance at the Carnegie Hall event. “I said, ‘Dad, you better be there! This is Carnegie Hall. Everyone’s paying tribute to you, and it’s an amazing group of artists,’” she recounts. The event holds a special place in Billy Joel’s history, as he first played Carnegie Hall in the 1970s. Returning decades later to witness this tribute is a “full-circle moment” for the music icon.

Navigating Fame and Forging Her Own Path

Like many artists following in famous footsteps, Alexa Ray has faced the pressure of living up to her surname. She acknowledges the initial struggle for validation, referencing her first single, “Notice Me.” However, she’s grown more comfortable asserting her own voice and embracing her unique artistic vision.

“Thinking ‘I have to live up to the last name’ is so unhealthy,” she explains. “Now that I’ve dug my heels into the industry and become more comfortable with asserting my own voice, some of that pressure’s died down.”

Her latest EP, Tales From a Winding Tower, showcases her songwriting prowess and musical evolution. Billy Joel encourages her to “do your own thing,” and remains a constant source of musical education.

A Dynamic Father-Daughter Relationship

Alexa Ray delights in surprising her father with her musical interpretations. She recalls covering “Just the Way You Are” for a Gap campaign, initially facing resistance from Billy, who favored a more upbeat tempo. However, her romantic and sweet rendition ultimately won him over. Similarly, her rock-fueled single “Riverside Way” unexpectedly impressed him.

“He said, ‘How the hell did you come up with that?’ It’s very different from his style and a detour from what I write, but I wanted to be more wild and he loved it,” she shares.

Giving Back Through Music

The proceeds from the tribute concert will benefit organizations providing music education programs to underserved youth, including Belongó and Midori & Friends. The event is expected to raise over $200,000 for these vital programs.

Ultimately, for Alexa Ray, the evening is a celebration of her father not just as a musical icon, but as a loving parent. “He’s just dad in a baseball cap, whistling around the house and joking around,” she says with a laugh. “He loves his daughters and he’s just … dad.”
