Gretchen Whitmer Meets with Trump: Securing Michigan’s Future

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer held another meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House, advocating for vital funding to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp, secure fighter jets for Macomb County’s Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and provide relief for recent severe storms. This was at least the third publicized meeting between the two since President Trump began his second term in 2025.

Securing Aid for Michigan’s Storm Recovery

Governor Whitmer, a Democrat, stated that President Trump pledged to provide additional aid to northern Michigan, which was heavily impacted by ice storms in March 2025. While specific details were limited as of Tuesday, the commitment offers hope for communities still recovering. The discussion also included the devastating tornadoes that struck southwest Michigan last week, resulting in four fatalities and twelve injuries.

Notably, President Trump agreed to reconsider a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) decision denying federal aid following last year’s ice storm. Governor Whitmer initially requested this aid in late July 2025, securing $50 million for governments and nonprofits, but initial denials for homeowners and utilities prompted an appeal, which was also rejected in October. The Governor also emphasized the need for funding to mitigate the impact of future storms.

Protecting the Great Lakes from Invasive Carp

A key focus of the meeting was the ongoing effort to prevent invasive carp from entering the Great Lakes. Governor Whitmer and President Trump agreed to collaborate on resuming plans for a series of barriers along the Des Plaines River in Joliet, Illinois, designed to block the carp’s advance. This project, known as the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, has faced funding challenges despite a memorandum signed by President Trump last May to kickstart construction.

President Trump highlighted the issue on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “I’m working with Governor Gretchen Whitmer on trying to save The Great Lakes from the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp.” He also expressed intentions to involve other Great Lakes governors in the effort. However, it’s important to note that while genetic material has been detected near Lake Michigan, neither silver nor bighead carp have actually been found *in* the lake itself.

You can find more information about the invasive carp issue and the Brandon Road Project at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.

Fighter Jets for Selfridge Air National Guard Base

The conversation also extended to the future of Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County. Both leaders discussed plans to bring new F-15EX fighter jets to the base. Recently, Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall authorized $152 million in state funding for runway construction, citing concerns about potential delays. This adds to previous state commitments of $63 million and $20 million in federal funding, though it falls short of the $200 million requested by Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin.

Governor Whitmer’s continued engagement with the federal government demonstrates her commitment to securing resources for Michigan’s critical infrastructure and environmental protection. The outcomes of these discussions will have a significant impact on the state’s economy and the well-being of its residents.
