One Battle After Another: Navigating the Oscar Race
As the Academy Awards approach, the competition intensifies. This year’s race is particularly compelling, with several key categories tightening and a fascinating battle unfolding between potential winners. While the best picture Oscar often narrows down to two frontrunners by the big night, the path to victory is rarely straightforward.
From Frontrunners to Contenders
Early in the awards season, Hamnet and One Battle After Another emerged as strong contenders, capturing the Golden Globes for best drama and best musical or comedy, respectively. However, the landscape has shifted. Hamnet has lost some momentum, while Sinners has surged forward, garnering significant praise at the Baftas and Actor Awards. Despite this, One Battle After Another remains – just barely – the favourite.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is a wildly distinctive masterpiece, triumphing at numerous awards ceremonies. Its poignant exploration of the clashes between undocumented immigrants and US law enforcement is both timely and impactful. However, the film hasn’t been without its critics, with some raising concerns about its portrayal of Black women.
The Director’s Chair: Anderson’s Time to Shine?
Despite a remarkable career spanning films like Boogie Nights and Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson has yet to secure an Oscar win, despite 14 nominations. While the narrative of “it’s his turn” is strong, his potential victory is more than just sentiment. One Battle After Another showcases Anderson’s masterful ability to weave together complex narratives, blending political relevance, comedic moments, and a touching father-daughter story seamlessly.
While Ryan Coogler is a talented director, Anderson’s consistent success in precursor awards, including the Bafta and Directors Guild Award, positions him as the likely winner for best director. He’s also a strong contender for producer and adapted screenplay, potentially securing a triple win in a single night.
Best Actress: A Foregone Conclusion?
In contrast to the competitive best picture race, the best actress category appears to be largely settled. Jessie Buckley’s powerful performance in Hamnet has been widely praised since its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, and she’s consistently been predicted to win the Oscar. While other nominees delivered nuanced performances, Buckley’s charisma and talent have made her the clear frontrunner.
Best Actor: Jordan Gains Momentum
The best actor category has seen a shift in momentum. Initially, Timothée Chalamet was considered the favourite, but Michael B. Jordan has gained significant ground with his dynamic performance in Sinners, particularly due to the challenge of playing identical twins. Jordan’s recent wins at the Bafta and Actor Awards further solidify his position, though Wagner Moura’s performance in The Secret Agent is also highly regarded.
Supporting Roles: Penn and Skarsgård Face Off
Sean Penn’s transformative performance in One Battle After Another has earned him a Bafta and an Actor Award. However, he faces stiff competition from Stellan Skarsgård, who delivers a formidable performance in Sentimental Value. Skarsgård’s lack of previous Oscar wins may give him an edge, as the industry often favours veteran actors.
Supporting Actress: A Tight Race
The supporting actress category remains the most unpredictable. Amy Madigan and Teyana Taylor have both been frontrunners at different points, and the race is incredibly close. Taylor’s explosive performance in One Battle After Another has gained significant momentum, but Madigan’s long and respected career could also sway voters.
Screenplay Showdowns
Sinners is poised to win best original screenplay, largely due to its commercial success and Ryan Coogler’s impressive body of work. For best adapted screenplay, One Battle After Another is the clear favourite, with its innovative adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland earning critical acclaim and precursor awards.
International Feature: A Global Stage
The international feature category showcases the strength of global cinema, with The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value as the frontrunners. The Secret Agent, a politically charged thriller from Brazil, is a strong contender, while Sentimental Value, an emotional family drama from Norway, has garnered nine nominations.
The 98th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 15th. The race is on!
