Benoit-Olivier Groulx Set to Shine: Maple Leafs Debut in Montreal
Benoit-Olivier Groulx is experiencing a breakout season with the Toronto Marlies, and tonight marks a special occasion: his first game in a Maple Leafs uniform, playing in front of family and friends at the Bell Centre in Montreal. A strong showing from the Quebec native is expected, with approximately ten family members and friends in attendance to witness this milestone.
AHL Dominance and Quebec Roots
Groulx has been a force in the AHL this season, leading the Marlies in scoring with an impressive 50 points, including 27 goals, in just 53 games. His development within the Quebec hockey system has been instrumental in his success. Born in France, Groulx’s journey to the NHL is a testament to his dedication and skill. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to share this moment with fellow French player Alexandre Texier, who is a scratch for the Canadiens tonight.
From Ducks Prospect to Maple Leafs Contender
Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks, Groulx spent several years honing his skills in their AHL affiliate, earning occasional recalls to the NHL. It wasn’t until the 2023-2024 season that the Ducks gave him a more extended opportunity, where he recorded two assists in 45 games. This past summer, the former captain of the Halifax Mooseheads made a strategic move, signing a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
A Long-Awaited Opportunity
Despite his stellar performance with the Marlies, a call-up to the Leafs seemed to be delayed. Groulx currently holds a significant 11-point lead over his closest competitor in Marlies scoring. Tonight, that patience pays off.
As reported, centre Bo Groulx will make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut tonight, with a supportive contingent of friends and family making the trip to Montreal. Groulx himself expressed that this moment will be just as rewarding for them as it is for him. (Calle Järnkrok also participated in extra work during the morning skate.)
