Detroit Lions Roster Moves & 2026 NFL Draft Outlook

Detroit Lions Make Roster Adjustments, Eyeing the 2026 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions have been active this offseason, making strategic moves to bolster their roster and prepare for the future. A significant change saw running back David Montgomery traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fourth-round and seventh-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, along with veteran offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.

Montgomery’s Departure & Gibbs’ Rise

Montgomery’s three seasons in Detroit were productive, amassing 2,506 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. However, his role diminished last season with the emergence of Pro Bowler Jahmyr Gibbs as the team’s primary running back. Gibbs has quickly established himself as a force in the NFL, boasting impressive stats through his first three seasons: 3,580 rushing yards, 39 touchdowns, 5,029 total scrimmage yards, and a remarkable 49 total touchdowns. This latter figure represents the most total touchdowns by a player in their first three NFL seasons – a testament to his impact.

Welcoming Juice Scruggs to the Line

The acquisition of Juice Scruggs, a 26-year-old offensive lineman, adds valuable depth to the Lions’ interior line. Drafted in the second round (No. 62 overall) in 2023 by the Texans, Scruggs has experience playing all three interior positions and has started 20 of his 37 career games, including 13 in 2024. He’ll compete for a starting role at center or guard, providing much-needed versatility.

New Faces Excited to Join the Pride

New additions to the Lions are already expressing their enthusiasm. Running back Isiah Pacheco is eager to contribute, while offensive linemen Cade Mays and Larry Borom are thrilled to join their hometown team. Mays highlighted his admiration for the Lions’ aggressive style of play, believing it’s a perfect fit for his skillset. Borom echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement about the opportunity to represent his city.

Looking Ahead: The 2026 NFL Draft

Currently, the Detroit Lions hold nine picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Analysts are closely monitoring upcoming pro days, and experts are offering predictions on who the Lions might select with their first-round pick. Key areas of need include strengthening the offensive line and adding depth at various positions. The team is also evaluating potential free agent acquisitions and prospects who have improved their draft stock at the NFL Scouting Combine.

With a strong tackle class expected in the 2026 draft, the Lions’ No. 17 overall pick could position them to secure a top-tier offensive tackle.
