Halifax Power Outage: Victoria General Hospital Update

Nova Scotia Health (NSH) is working to resolve a recent power outage that impacted the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. The issue stemmed from a problem with one of the building’s two transformers, occurring just before midnight on March 6th.

While backup generators were immediately activated, the transformer malfunction led to a temporary loss of power. NSH swiftly requested Nova Scotia Power to switch the building to a secondary feed, successfully restoring full power by approximately 5:30 a.m. The Centennial Building also returned to regular power shortly after.

Transformer Replacement & Service Disruptions

NSH has announced plans to replace the faulty transformer within 24 hours, with normal operations expected to resume by the end of the week. A brief power shutdown, lasting up to two hours, will be necessary to connect and test the new transformer.

The power outage unfortunately caused disruptions to scheduled surgeries. As of Tuesday, 21 surgeries had been relocated to other facilities, and an additional 39 surgeries were rescheduled. NSH is working diligently to minimize the impact on patients.
