Taiwan Weather Update: Cold Air Mass & Typhoon Nuri – A Comprehensive Forecast

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reports that western Taiwan may experience isolated showers this morning, but conditions will improve throughout the day, transitioning to sunny and partly cloudy skies. Eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula may see occasional brief rainfall.

Typhoon Nuri – No Direct Impact on Taiwan

Tropical Depression, previously located east of the Philippines, has developed into Light Typhoon Nuri (designated as #2603). It is currently moving eastward and is not expected to directly impact Taiwan’s weather, with limited intensification expected.

Temperature Fluctuations & Cold Air Warning

This morning, a cold air mass is influencing temperatures across Taiwan. Radiational cooling may cause particularly low temperatures in northern and central Taiwan, as well as Yilan County, ranging from 12 to 14°C. Southern and eastern regions will experience temperatures between 13 and 15°C. It will feel quite chilly, so dressing warmly is advised.

However, daytime sunshine will quickly raise temperatures to between 20 and 24°C across most of the island. Kaohsiung and Pingtung Counties can expect warmer temperatures of 26-27°C. Be mindful of the significant temperature difference between day and night.

The CWB issued a low-temperature advisory this morning at 4:31 AM, indicating a probability of temperatures around or below 10°C in New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Hsinchu County (Orange Alert – Very Cold). Miaoli County, Changhua County, and Kinmen County have a probability of temperatures below 10°C (Yellow Alert – Cold).

Island Weather Conditions

  • Penghu: Sunny to partly cloudy, 17-18°C
  • Kinmen: Sunny to partly cloudy, 11-18°C
  • Matsu: Sunny to partly cloudy, 8-13°C

Air Quality

Air quality is “Good” in Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung. It is “Moderate” in northern, central, Yunlin-Chiayi, Kaohsiung-Pingtung, Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu regions.

Extended Forecast

Tomorrow (March 12th): A continental cold air mass or another strong one is expected to move south, causing temperatures to drop further in the north and northeast. Other regions will also experience cooler temperatures, especially in the mornings and evenings. The central and south will experience large day-night temperature swings. Localized, brief showers are expected in eastern, southeastern regions, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Isolated, brief showers are also possible on the north coast of Keelung, in the Greater Taipei area, the northeast, and northern mountains. Other areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny.

Friday (March 13th): The continental cold air mass or strong one, combined with radiational cooling, will bring cold mornings and evenings across Taiwan. Large day-night temperature swings are expected. Most areas will be sunny to partly cloudy, with isolated, brief showers in the Keelung north coast, eastern regions, and the Hengchun Peninsula.

Saturday (March 14th): The continental cold air mass or strong one will gradually weaken, leading to rising daytime temperatures. Radiational cooling will still cause cool mornings and evenings with significant temperature differences. Most areas will be sunny to partly cloudy, with isolated, brief showers in the southeastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula.

Sunday (March 15th) – Tuesday (March 17th): Mornings and evenings will remain relatively cool across Taiwan, with large day-night temperature swings in the central and south. Most areas will be sunny to partly cloudy, with isolated, brief showers in the Keelung north coast, eastern regions, northern Taipei mountains, and the Hengchun Peninsula.
