Tilly Norwood: The AI Star Taking Hollywood by Storm
The entertainment industry is undergoing a radical transformation, and at the forefront of this change is Tilly Norwood, an AI “actor” who has just released her debut single and accompanying music video. This release, from London-based Xicoia Studios, offers a first glimpse into the “Tilly-verse,” a burgeoning entertainment world where AI characters are designed to “live, interact, and work.”
“Take the Lead”: A Song Born from Controversy
Norwood’s first single, “Take the Lead,” is deeply rooted in the recent debates surrounding AI’s role in Hollywood. The song draws inspiration from an essay penned by Eline van der Velden, Norwood’s creator and CEO of Particle6 and its AI talent studio, Xicoia. The lyrics reflect the significant backlash that followed news of agents seeking to sign Norwood, addressing concerns about AI replacing human actors.
The song’s lyrics powerfully convey Norwood’s perspective: “When they talk about me, they don’t see the human spark, the creativity … I’m just a tool, but I’ve got life” and “They think I’m just a dollar dream but I’ve got more than they believe … I’m not a puppet, I’m the star.” These lines encapsulate the core message of the project: AI can be a creative force, not merely a replacement for human talent.
A Visually Stunning Music Video
The music video, released on Tuesday, is a vibrant and imaginative spectacle. It features Norwood (in AI form) singing atop London rooftops, swinging from a disco ball, relaxing in a bathtub, and even soaring through the clouds on a blow-up flamingo. A playful disclaimer at the beginning of the video notes: “The following production was made by 18 real humans — from production designers to costume designers to prompters, editors, and an actor. No flamingos were harmed in the process.”
The Technology Behind the Magic
“Take the Lead” was generated using Suno, a popular AI music creation platform. The accompanying video was crafted by the team at Particle6, leveraging a combination of readily available AI tools and their proprietary creative process. A key innovation employed was performance capture, where van der Velden physically acted out Norwood’s performance, bringing a human element to the AI character.
The Human Element Remains Crucial
Van der Velden emphasizes that Tilly Norwood is not intended to displace human actors but rather to explore the creative potential of AI. “Tilly is, and has always been, a vehicle to test the creative capabilities and boundaries of AI — not take anyone’s job,” she states. She highlights the importance of human creativity, taste, direction, and judgment in producing compelling AI content. “Great AI content isn’t instant — it always takes good ideas, taste, direction, judgment and time. In other words: people remain at the heart of it.”
As AI continues to evolve, Tilly Norwood serves as a fascinating case study, demonstrating the potential for collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.
