Boston Bruins: The Rise and Potential Regression of Morgan Geekie
As the 2025-26 season nears its conclusion and the playoffs loom, it’s time to spotlight a key player for the Boston Bruins: Morgan Geekie. Over the past two seasons, Geekie has exceeded expectations, amassing an impressive 67 goals in 138 games as a top-six forward. This is a remarkable transformation for a player who once struggled to find his footing with the Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken.
From Role Player to Bruins Star
Geekie never truly established himself as more than a depth player with either the Hurricanes or the Kraken, averaging just 9:23 of ice time per game with Seattle before joining the Bruins in the 2023 offseason. Now, as the Bruins push for a playoff berth, fans are captivated by Geekie’s scoring prowess and playmaking abilities. This performance earned him a substantial contract extension in June 2025, a six-year deal with a $5.5 million average annual value (AAV) and a no-trade clause for the next season, securing his future in black and gold until 2031.
A Rewarding Journey, But a Potential Plateau?
Geekie’s hard work deserves recognition, and his evolution from a role player is undeniable. However, Bruins fans should be aware that his current goal-scoring pace may not be sustainable. History offers a cautionary tale: consider Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers. Kreider enjoyed three consecutive 30-plus goal seasons (2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24) before experiencing a decline, currently tallying 20-plus goals with the Rangers and Anaheim Ducks.
Geekie’s scoring surge with the Bruins has been impressive. His shooting percentage has steadily increased – from 22% in 2024-25 to 24.1% in 2025-26 – but, like Kreider, a regression to the mean is likely. He’s not shy about shooting, averaging 2.3 shots per game while playing alongside skilled linemates.
The Age Curve and Shooting Percentage
A 2016 Sports Illustrated article highlighted a crucial point: a player’s shooting percentage tends to follow an age curve. Younger players typically have lower percentages that improve with experience, while older players often see their shooting ability decline as their overall game deteriorates. While analysts often assume shooting percentages will revert to career averages, this overlooks the impact of age.
A Consequential Signing for the Bruins
Morgan Geekie has proven to be one of General Manager Don Sweeney’s most successful signings in recent years. Acquired as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in July 2023 on a modest $2 million AAV, Geekie has seamlessly integrated into the Bruins’ system. His goal production has increased each season since joining the team, transforming him from a bottom-six forward into a reliable 30-plus goal scorer.
Geekie’s 2025-26 Stats
Currently, Geekie’s 2025-26 stats stand at 34 goals, 23 assists for 57 points, and a minus-7 rating. While a decline in scoring is anticipated, it’s a matter of when, not if, given the patterns observed in other high-scoring players.
Areas for Improvement
To prolong his success, Geekie should focus on refining his backchecking and puck possession skills. He’s turned the puck over 54 times this season, an increase from last season’s 51. Improving in these areas could address his current Corsi-for percentage (CF%) of 49.3.
Throughout his 394-game NHL career, Geekie has tallied 106 goals and 109 assists for 215 points, playing for the Carolina Hurricanes, Seattle Kraken, and Boston Bruins.
