Alex Anzalone Joins the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Alex Anzalone, a key contributor to the Detroit Lions defense for the past four seasons, is heading home to Florida. The 31-year-old linebacker has agreed to a two-year contract worth $17 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, marking a significant move in the early stages of the 2026 NFL free agency period. The deal, reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, will officially become finalized when the new league year begins on Wednesday.
From Detroit to Tampa Bay: A Hometown Return
Anzalone arrived in Detroit in 2021, joining a team aiming to rebuild and contend. He quickly became a defensive cornerstone under Coach Dan Campbell and General Manager Brad Holmes. His consistent performance and leadership qualities made him a four-time team captain. The New York Jets and New York Giants also reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the veteran linebacker, but Anzalone ultimately chose to return to his roots.
A Consistent Force on Defense
Throughout his tenure with the Lions, Anzalone consistently demonstrated his tackling prowess. He led the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons, culminating in a career-high 129 stops in 2023. Even while battling a broken forearm in 2024, he managed 95 tackles and a personal-best nine pass breakups. His ability to disrupt plays and contribute in coverage made him a valuable asset.
Contract Negotiations and the Decision to Move On
Despite his contributions, Anzalone’s future with the Lions had been uncertain for some time. A contract dispute in 2024 led him to skip offseason workouts, and while he eventually returned to practice, the pay increase was minimal. He signed a three-year extension in 2023, but the underlying issues remained. He acknowledged the situation was simply “business,” stating his desire to return while prioritizing his family’s needs.
Lions’ Linebacker Situation
The Lions, who finished 9-8 in the 2025 season and missed the playoffs, have already invested heavily in their linebacker corps. Derrick Barnes received a three-year, $25.5 million extension last spring, and Jack Campbell is expected to receive a lucrative new contract this offseason. With these investments, the Lions decided to let Anzalone explore other opportunities.
Buccaneers’ Pursuit of Playoff Contention
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coming off an 8-9 season and a playoff absence in 2025, are hoping Anzalone will be a key piece in their pursuit of a playoff berth. His experience and tackling ability should bolster their defense and provide stability in the middle.
