Bill Maher and Donald Trump: A Contentious Back-and-Forth
Bill Maher is responding to a barrage of criticism from former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly targeted the comedian on his Truth Social platform. The latest exchange stems from Trump’s continued commentary on a dinner the two shared in 2023, a meeting that continues to fuel a public back-and-forth.
Trump’s Truth Social Attacks
On the March 6th episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host addressed a series of posts from Trump sharing news articles critical of Maher. Trump labeled Maher a “jerk” and deemed a dinner with him a “total waste of time.” Maher pointed out the timing of these attacks, occurring amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, expressing his bewilderment with a simple, “This is getting weird.”
The Dinner and Its Aftermath
The initial friction began in February when Trump complained about the dinner, which was arranged by their mutual friend, Kid Rock. Trump claimed Maher’s HBO show had become “very boring” and “ANTI TRUMP” following their meeting. However, Maher reveals a different story. He alleges that Trump texted him shortly after their dinner, lamenting that Maher remained part of the “lunatic left” and asserting he “should have won a Nobel Prize for ending wars.”
Maher’s response? “Yeah, and I should have won 20 Emmys.” According to Maher, a text exchange ensued, culminating in Trump stating, “Bill, you know what? Don’t change. I wouldn’t know what to do with you if you did.” Maher interprets this as a glimpse of the “normal human being” he encountered during their dinner, and maintains that the meeting wasn’t a waste of time as long as there’s a possibility of fostering that connection.
Disputing Trump’s Claims
Maher vehemently disputed several of Trump’s claims regarding the dinner. He clarified that he didn’t request the meeting, wasn’t intimidated, and the conversation wasn’t brief. “I was having a good time,” Maher stated, “So were you, Don, because we were talking like real humans, not like that crazy act you put on in public.”
To demonstrate his willingness to acknowledge Trump’s accomplishments, Maher showcased clips of himself praising the former president on “Real Time,” arguing that he doesn’t suffer from “Trump derangement syndrome.” He countered by suggesting Trump is experiencing “Bill Maher derangement syndrome.”
Defending the Dinner and Freedom of Speech
Maher defended his decision to dine with Trump, despite criticism from the left. He drew a parallel, stating, “Despite all the hate I got from my side, I never threw you under the bus and said, ‘Oh, you’re right, I shouldn’t have ate steak with Hitler,’ because that’s stupid.” He emphasized his right to criticize Trump, stating, “There’s lots of stuff you do that is not my idea of success, and I have every right to say so in a democracy.”
This isn’t the first time Maher has addressed Trump’s post-dinner commentary. On a previous episode of “Real Time,” he suggested Trump was upset because he expected Maher to cease his criticism after their meeting. “I never said I would!” Maher exclaimed. “I know how women feel now: A guy buys you dinner and then expects you to put out. I’m not that guy.”
The ongoing exchange highlights the complex and often contentious relationship between the comedian and the former president. It also underscores the importance of open dialogue and the freedom to express differing opinions, even – and perhaps especially – with those we disagree with.
