Monaco Stuns PSG with Decisive 3-1 Victory
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) suffered a humbling 3-1 defeat against AS Monaco on Friday night at the Parc des Princes, marking a significant setback in Ligue 1 and raising concerns ahead of their upcoming Champions League tie against Chelsea. This result allows Lens to close the gap on the league leaders, potentially to within one point, should they win their match against Metz on Sunday.
PSG Struggles to Replicate 2025 Form
The 2026 season has seen PSG struggle to recapture the dynamism and brilliance that characterized their successful 2025 campaign. Despite numerous attacking attempts, the team lacked the control and precision that defined their previous performances. The wasteful finishing, exemplified by Bradley Barcola’s multiple missed opportunities (33rd, 39th, 41st, 50th, 68th minutes), proved costly. While Barcola managed to score a fortunate goal – a soft shot deflected by a defender – it barely masked the team’s overall shortcomings.
The absence of Ousmane Dembélé from the starting lineup, due to a recurring physical issue, appeared to contribute to a lack of leadership on the pitch. Players like Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also struggled to find their creative spark.
Monaco’s Clinical Performance
Monaco, fresh off a narrow Champions League playoff defeat, demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline. Maghnes Akliouche tormented the PSG defense, capitalizing on a risky pass from Warren Zaïre-Emery to open the scoring in the 27th minute. Alexander Golovin, eager to redeem himself after a previous exclusion, doubled Monaco’s lead shortly after halftime with a well-coordinated play involving Mamadou Coulibaly and Folarin Balogun (55th minute).
Golovin continued to threaten, forcing PSG goalkeeper Matveï Safonov into action with a stunning strike (57th minute). Balogun also tested Safonov (72nd minute), but ultimately found the net again following a turnover by Lee Kang-in (3-1, 73rd minute). A late attempt by Simon Adringra hit the crossbar, narrowly preventing a more significant humiliation for PSG (87th minute).
Champions League Concerns Loom
Despite a valiant effort, including a close chance for Ousmane Dembélé (62nd minute), PSG’s lackluster performance raises serious questions about their readiness for the Champions League clash against Chelsea. Having already lost to Chelsea 3-0 at the Club World Cup in July, PSG will need a significant improvement to stand a chance against the London side.
Monaco’s Impressive Form
Monaco’s victory was built on a relentless pressing game, mirroring the tactics PSG themselves often employ. Under the guidance of Sébastien Pocognoli, Monaco has been in excellent form, earning 16 points from their last 18 available in Ligue 1, temporarily placing them fifth in the league standings. Their ability to transition quickly between defense and attack proved decisive against PSG.
