Stuart Fairchild Leads Chinese Taipei to Decisive Victory Over Czechia
TOKYO – The Tokyo Dome erupted with an unexpected wave of energy as Chinese Taipei delivered a dominant 14-0 mercy rule victory over Czechia on Saturday afternoon. While the stadium was packed with fans anticipating Samurai Japan, it was the visiting team that stole the show, fueled by a stellar performance from players like Stuart Fairchild.
A Must-Win Game for Chinese Taipei
You could have forgiven the Taiwanese fans for being subdued. After losing their first two World Baseball Classic games without scoring a run, this game against Czechia – a team exceeding expectations simply by competing – was essentially a relegation contest. The loser would likely face a Qualifier before the next tournament. However, the fans responded with unwavering support, mirroring the energy of a championship game.
Early Offense Sets the Tone
Chinese Taipei wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning with a series of well-executed bunts. A key contributor was Guardians Minor Leaguer Stuart Fairchild, who laid down a bunt single. A double steal with a throwing error and an RBI single from former big leaguer Yu Chang quickly put Chinese Taipei ahead 2-0.
Manager Hao-Jiu Tseng explained the strategic shift: “In the previous two games, our offense was kind of struggling. So before the game started, we thought we should go back to the fundamentals, and I asked all the players what the best approach to do was, and that’s the result.”
Fairchild’s Grand Slam Ignites the Team
The second inning saw Fairchild step up to the plate with the bases loaded. After a controversial call the night before where he believed he hit a home run, Fairchild was determined to focus on the present. “Honestly after yesterday when I thought I hit the homer, I was thinking about it a lot,” Fairchild said. “And today, I just tried to flush it and realize it’s a new day. Not dwell on the past and show up today to help the team win. That was my priority. It was to not think about myself but rather the team and do what I can today to help the team win.”
He didn’t disappoint, launching a grand slam that extended Chinese Taipei’s lead. Despite a quick turnaround from a late game the previous night, Fairchild joked, “I felt a little tired to be honest, quick turnaround from the late game yesterday to an early one today. But I got as much sleep as I could and drank a bunch of coffee, so we were ready to go.”
Dominant Performance All Around
Yu Chang added three hits and four RBIs, while Chen-Wei Chen drove in three runs. Starting pitcher Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang, the A’s No. 27 prospect, pitched 2 2/3 innings, striking out four to secure the victory. Zhuang emphasized the team’s collective effort: “We were 0-2 and the key for my role is to just win this game, and we did. All of my teammates feel responsible and want to do everything they can do, and that’s why my teammate sitting next to me hit a grand slam. I’m very thankful.”
Looking Ahead
While the victory keeps Chinese Taipei’s hopes of advancing alive, they face a challenging matchup against Korea. Manager Tseng stated, “Tomorrow’s game is also an elimination game. We have to win to stay positive. So all of our roster is available.”
Despite the likely relegation to a Qualifier, Czechia can hold their heads high. They recently won a bronze medal at the European Baseball Championship, a historic achievement for the nation. Catcher Martin Červenka reflected on the team’s progress: “Because the WBC is worldwide, it has a lot wider reach, and this way, we can get more people to follow our team or notice Czech baseball and Czech players and that we have do have some talent on our team.”
