Gate River Run 2026: San Marco’s Electric Energy Fuels Runners

Jacksonville, FL – As the 2026 Gate River Run approaches, runners are already anticipating one of the most iconic and energizing sections of the course: the San Marco neighborhood. While the “Green Monster” on the Hart Bridge presents a formidable challenge, San Marco offers a vibrant and supportive atmosphere that runners consistently cite as their favorite part of the race.

For many, the Gate River Run isn’t just about speed and endurance; it’s about the community that lines the streets, offering cheers, snacks, and creative boosts. Runner Joe Ruppert recalls the delightful experience of receiving Dunkin’ Donut balls from enthusiastic San Marco residents. “You got people throwing the little Dunkin’ Donut balls at you in San Marco,” he shared.

A Neighborhood’s Tradition of Support

The historic San Marco neighborhood has become synonymous with the Gate River Run experience. Loud crowds, upbeat music, and elaborate “hydration stations” provide runners with a much-needed second wind. “You just can’t beat San Marco,” says Paul Davis, a frequent participant. “It’s electric.”

Residents dedicate days to transforming their blocks into festive, block-party-style setups. These include themed stations designed to entertain and energize the thousands of runners passing through. Gaby Haddad, a San Marco resident, explains, “It’s been one of my most favorite things about living on this street.”

More Than Just Hydration: A San Marco Tradition

One house in particular has become legendary, known for its lively atmosphere, DJ-like vibes, and, in years past, even tequila shots for runners. “It puts a little pep in your step,” says resident Pete Behringer, who helps orchestrate the scene. This year, residents are preparing even more generously, with 90 pounds of bananas, 20 tequila handles, and 2,000 shot glasses.

“I feel like sometimes people are sagging, they’re like, ‘Oh man, you know we’ve got a long way to go, and then, boom, here we are: Music, bananas, tequila,” Behringer explains. “So many people are thrilled with what we have to offer.”

While some residents, like Haddid, focus on hydration and power-up boxes, the common thread is a desire to uplift and support the runners. “We tried mimosas one year and that was insane, so I switched to waters over here,” Haddid laughs.

A Community Identity

The residents of San Marco view their participation in the Gate River Run as an integral part of their community identity. “This is like part of our identity, and I think it really matters,” Behringer emphasizes. The energy and enthusiasm of the neighborhood contribute significantly to the overall success and spirit of the Gate River Run.

As the 2026 Gate River Run draws closer, runners can look forward to the unforgettable experience that awaits them in San Marco – a testament to the power of community and the joy of running.
