Trevor Zegras and the Flyers’ Trade Deadline Strategy: A Deep Dive

The Philadelphia Flyers are navigating a fascinating period as the NHL trade deadline approaches. A recent surge in performance, including a three-game winning streak and points in six of their last seven, has complicated matters for General Manager Danny Briere. This marks Briere’s third trade deadline at the helm, a stark contrast to his previous two years focused primarily on rebuilding through asset accumulation.

Where Do the Flyers Stand in the Playoff Race?

Currently, the Flyers find themselves on the periphery of the playoff picture. They trail the Boston Bruins, holders of the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot, by six points. With 22 games remaining, their postseason probability, according to Hockey-Reference.com, sits at 15.4%. The team’s recent form, however, has injected a new level of intrigue into the situation.

Before the Olympic break, a damaging stretch of 12 losses in 15 games derailed their playoff hopes. Prior to that slide, the Flyers were impressively positioned in third place in the Metropolitan Division at the season’s halfway point.

Flyers’ Deadline Approach: A Shift in Philosophy?

Initially, the Flyers’ front office signaled a desire to avoid being aggressive sellers at the deadline. The focus was on continued improvement, not a desperate push for the playoffs. As President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones stated in September, the goal was “advancing; it’s not about moving back.”

The Flyers have shown progress, particularly in goaltending and defensive play. However, the question remains: has that progress been sufficient to warrant retaining all current assets? Briere has already accumulated five first-round picks over the last three drafts and could potentially add more in the next two. Addressing a need for talent, especially at center, could be a priority.

Potential Flyers Trade Candidates

Rasmus Ristolainen emerges as the most likely candidate to be moved. The 31-year-old defenseman possesses qualities highly sought after by contending teams – size (6’4”), physicality, and a right-handed shot. His game has improved, and he’s reduced his penalty count. However, with only one year remaining on his contract at a $5.1 million cap hit, and a history of injury concerns (including two triceps tendon ruptures), the Flyers might capitalize on his current value. Briere isn’t expected to trade Ristolainen without receiving a significant return, potentially a first- or second-round pick, and a promising young player.

While less likely, Owen Tippett and Bobby Brink could also attract interest. The Flyers have a surplus of young wingers, with prospects like Porter Martone and Alex Bump potentially joining the team next season. Tippett’s talent is undeniable, and Brink is establishing himself as a valuable player. However, these moves seem more probable during the offseason.

Several pending unrestricted free agents, including Noah Juulsen, Carl Grundstrom, Nicolas Deslauriers, and Anthony Richard, could be moved as inexpensive depth pieces.

Will the Flyers Add Any Players?

While unlikely to become major buyers, the Flyers might consider acquiring a younger player with team control or taking on a contract to facilitate a deal. However, they won’t be sacrificing future assets for a short-term boost. As Briere emphasized in January, any move must contribute to the team’s long-term success. “If we do make a move, it’s going to be something that’s going to help us for the future, as well; not just in the moment.”

The situation surrounding players like Trevor Zegras, who is currently with the Anaheim Ducks and subject to trade rumors, could potentially influence the Flyers’ strategy. While not directly linked to the Flyers at this time, the availability of a talented young player like Zegras could force Briere to re-evaluate his options. The Flyers need to carefully weigh the potential benefits of adding a player of Zegras’ caliber against the cost of acquiring him.
