Hurricanes vs Oilers: A Clash Following a Frenzied Trade Deadline

The Edmonton Oilers are set to host the Carolina Hurricanes at Rogers Place this Friday, marking the conclusion of a two-game homestand. This highly anticipated game follows a whirlwind NHL Trade Deadline, where the Oilers were notably active in bolstering their roster for a strong playoff push. Fans can catch the action live on Sportsnet at 7:00 PM MT or tune in to the Oilers Radio Network, including 880 CHED. For exclusive content, consider subscribing to Oilers+.

Oilers Bolster Defense and Depth

The Oilers have been making significant moves, acquiring key players from the Chicago Blackhawks. Defenceman Connor Murphy and forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach have joined the team, addressing critical needs as the regular season winds down. The addition of Murphy, a seasoned defensive player with nine seasons under his belt, is expected to significantly improve the Oilers’ defensive capabilities and penalty kill – areas where they’ve been looking for improvement.

Murphy, a 6-foot-4, 212-pound blueliner, brings a balanced presence to the Oilers’ defensive pairings, offering both left and right-shot options. He’s projected to partner with Jake Walman, based on initial practice lineups.

New Additions Speak

Connor Murphy expressed his excitement about joining the Oilers, noting the high expectations and his eagerness to contribute. “Any NHL game, you have some nerves, but here you obviously have high expectations for yourself to try to perform and do your best and show what you have,” Murphy stated after Thursday’s practice. “I’m getting better every day, more comfortable with the systems and linemates, and hopefully we can get a win tomorrow.”

Further Trades with Chicago

The Oilers continued their dealings with Chicago, acquiring centres Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach in exchange for Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick. The Blackhawks will retain half of Murphy’s and Dickinson’s cap hits, easing the financial impact for Edmonton.

Murphy provided valuable insights into his former teammates, describing Dickinson as a “solid defensive centre” who excels against top opposition lines and is a calm veteran leader. He characterized Dach as a young, energetic player who will inject excitement into the locker room. “Dach also has an engine and is a big guy who has some poise at the puck in the corners for a young guy,” Murphy added.

Focus on Defensive Strength

Notably, both Murphy and Dickinson were key penalty killers for the Blackhawks, contributing to their top-ranked penalty kill in the NHL (85.9 percent). The Oilers, with a 76.7 percent penalty kill rate, are hoping these additions will significantly improve their defensive performance and ability to neutralize opposing power plays.

Head Coach Kris Knoblauch emphasized that the acquisitions were primarily focused on bolstering the team’s defensive capabilities. “We weren’t looking to score or add more goals,” Knoblauch explained. “These guys will contribute a little bit, but it wasn’t on our radar that we needed to find ways to score more goals. It’s about getting better defensively and guys who can play with a little bit of an edge and play in the playoffs.”

Lineup Implications and Future Outlook

The Oilers are hoping Dickinson can fill a third-line centre role, relieving some of the pressure on stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Dach, a St. Albert native, is expected to bring energy and physicality to the bench. General Manager Stan Bowman indicated that the Oilers are likely finished making moves before the deadline, but remain open to considering any opportunities that might arise.

“I think he’s going to be a guy who adds a little sandpaper to our team — little bit of grit, gets in the forecheck, finishes checks, and tell the opposition that we’re a hard team to play against and that they have to move the puck quickly or else they’re getting hit,” Knoblauch said.
