Kurdistan Denies Involvement in Iran Conflict Amidst Rising Tensions

Tehran, Iran – March 6, 2024 – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has vehemently denied reports alleging its participation in any campaign against Iran. These denials come amidst escalating tensions in the region and claims of potential US involvement in arming Kurdish opposition groups.

“Reports that speak about a role of the Kurdistan Region and the allegations claiming that we are part of a plan to arm and send Kurdish opposition parties into Iranian territory are completely unfounded,” stated Peshawa Hawramani, Spokesperson of the Kurdistan Region Government, in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter). “We categorically deny them and affirm that they are being published deliberately and maliciously. The Kurdistan Regional Government and the political parties within it are not part of any campaign to expand the war and tensions in the region. On the contrary, we call for peace and stability.”

Allegations of US Support and Kurdish Buildup

The KRG’s statement follows a report in The Economist suggesting a buildup of Kurdish forces along the border with Iran, coinciding with ongoing Israeli and US military actions targeting Iran. Further fueling speculation, CNN reported that the CIA has been working to arm Kurdish forces with the aim of potentially inciting a popular uprising within Iran.

According to CNN, a senior Iranian Kurdish official revealed that former US President Donald Trump had previously engaged in discussions with the President of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), a group previously targeted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran Prepares for Prolonged Conflict

Meanwhile, the IRGC has asserted its readiness for a “prolonged war,” announcing the imminent introduction of a new generation of strategic weaponry. Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini emphasized the country’s preparedness to retaliate against any aggressor.

“Iran’s new initiatives and weapons are on the way,” declared the IRGC spokesperson. “These technologies have not yet been deployed on a large scale. The enemy should expect painful blows in every upcoming operational wave.” The IRGC claims that the recent attacks under “Operation True Promise” represent only a fraction of its overall capabilities.

Regional Conflict Intensifies

The conflict is currently in its sixth day, with the US and Israel continuing intensive bombing campaigns against Iranian targets. Iran has responded with targeted attacks on US assets in the region. The situation remains highly volatile, with concerns mounting over potential escalation. The geopolitical implications of these events are significant, potentially impacting stability across the Middle East and beyond. Understanding the nuances of the Baghdad region is crucial to comprehending the broader context of these conflicts.
