Brayden Schenn Trade Rumors: Could the Avalanche Land the Veteran Forward?
For months, Brayden Schenn’s name has been linked to the Colorado Avalanche in trade speculation. Now, as the NHL trade deadline rapidly approaches, the possibility of the veteran forward joining Colorado is gaining serious traction. Could Schenn be the missing piece to propel the Avalanche deeper into the playoffs?
Schenn’s Potential Fit with the Avalanche
Evan Rawal of The Denver Gazette first explored the potential fit between Schenn and the Avalanche back in February 2025. While initially considered a long shot, the situation has evolved, and Schenn has emerged as a prime candidate for Colorado. According to Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic, the Avalanche may be the only team Schenn would consider if he were to be traded.
This preference stems from Schenn’s 15-team no-trade clause, giving him significant control over his destination. Rutherford notes, “Schenn might only be interested in moving if the team is the Colorado Avalanche.” This level of interest speaks volumes about the Avalanche’s appeal and the potential for Schenn to contribute to a championship run.

Schenn’s Stats and Contract
The 34-year-old Schenn is a versatile player capable of playing both center and wing. This season, as captain of the St. Louis Blues – a team he helped lead to a Stanley Cup victory in 2019 – he has recorded 12 goals and 28 points in 61 games. He has two years remaining on his contract, carrying a $6.5 million cap hit. Last season, Schenn demonstrated even greater offensive prowess, tallying 50 points in 82 games.
Currently, Schenn anchors the Blues’ top line at left wing alongside Robert Thomas and Jimmy Snuggerud. If acquired by the Avalanche, he would likely add depth to the lineup, potentially bolstering the third-line wing. A deal would almost certainly require salary retention from the Blues to make it feasible.
Cautionary Notes from an Avalanche Legend
Despite the enticing prospect of adding Schenn, Avalanche legend Erik Johnson cautions against disrupting a team already performing at an exceptional level. “This is where I would be cautious,” Johnson stated when discussing the possibility of adding a winger at the deadline. “The Avs are having their best season ever. Boston added after a record-setting regular season in 2023 and got bounced in Round 1. There is something to be said for not tinkering too much when your team is rolling.”
Johnson’s point is well-taken. The Avalanche have been dominant throughout the season, and team chemistry is a delicate balance. Introducing a new player, even one as skilled as Schenn, could potentially disrupt that harmony – a lesson the Boston Bruins learned the hard way in 2023.
Avalanche Already Making Moves
Colorado has already begun to address depth concerns, acquiring defenseman Nick Blankenburg and center Nicolas Roy to further strengthen the roster. Whether Brayden Schenn will join them remains to be seen. As the trade deadline looms, all eyes in Denver are focused on whether the Avalanche will make a final push to land the veteran forward. The next few hours will be crucial in determining Schenn’s future and the Avalanche’s playoff prospects.
