The Lifesaving Journey of Blood Donation: From Donor to Patient

DULUTH, Minn. – Giving blood donation is one of the most impactful ways to help those in need within our community. But have you ever wondered what happens after you roll up your sleeve? It’s a meticulously coordinated process, ensuring every drop reaches a patient when they need it most. This is the story of that journey, from the generous donor to the life saved.

A Legacy of Giving: The Donor’s Perspective

For nearly 50 years, Jean Franckowiak has been a dedicated blood donor. “I can make sure somebody else is living or thriving because of my blood,” she shares, embodying the selfless spirit of giving. Her commitment, and that of countless others, fuels a system designed for efficiency and safety.

The Logistics of Life: Transporting and Testing

Once blood is collected and carefully labeled, a network of dedicated volunteer drivers springs into action. Brittany Barrens Markren is one such volunteer. “I pick up blood products and supplies, delivering them to donor sites and testing facilities,” she explains. This crucial step ensures timely processing and quality control.

After rigorous testing at a specialized facility, the donated blood returns to Memorial Blood Centers, ready for its final destination. Markren then receives her delivery assignments, connecting the supply with the demand.

From Hospital to Patient: Ensuring Safety and Availability

One key destination is Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital. Upon arrival, the blood donations are immediately transferred to the laboratory, where Jennifer Alaspa, Laboratory Administrative Director, and her team take charge. “The first thing we do is safety checks to ensure the shipment arrived at the correct temperature and is safe for transfusion,” Alaspa emphasizes. Each unit is then scanned into the hospital’s inventory system, meticulously logged, and stored in specialized refrigerators.

The need for blood is constant. “On any given day, we can administer anywhere from 10 to 40 units of blood,” Alaspa notes. These units are vital for a wide range of medical needs, including supporting patients in the birthing center and the emergency department. As Alaspa points out, “You never know when you’re going to be the one that needs a blood transfusion.”

The Ripple Effect: Knowing Your Donation Matters

For Franckowiak, the knowledge of where her blood donation goes is profoundly rewarding. “It feels good, it’s heartwarming,” she says. “So whatever I can do, I do.” Her story highlights the powerful impact of a single act of kindness.
