Mexico vs. Great Britain: A WBC 2026 Clash of Rising Stars

HOUSTON – As the 2026 World Baseball Classic approaches, all eyes are on Team Mexico, fueled by their impressive performance in the 2023 tournament. Their opening test comes against Great Britain, a team making strides in the international baseball scene after qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 2023. Mexico’s near-miss in 2023, battling Team USA and Puerto Rico, proved they have the potential to reach the championship round, and this year’s roster is packed with the star power to make it happen.

Mexico’s Powerhouse Lineup

Randy Arozarena remains the most recognizable face on Mexico’s roster, but the team’s depth is undeniable. Returning players from the 2023 squad include Jarren Duran (Boston Red Sox), Jonathan Aranda (Tampa Bay Rays), and Javier Assad (Chicago Cubs). Mexico has bolstered their pitching staff with the addition of closer Andrés Muñoz (Seattle Mariners), and added offensive firepower with Joey Ortiz (Milwaukee Brewers) and Robert Garcia (Texas Rangers). A significant boost comes with the return of Alejandro Kirk (Toronto Blue Jays), who missed the 2023 Classic.

Great Britain’s Rising Potential

While Mexico enters as the favorite, Great Britain shouldn’t be underestimated. Led by Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., the team brings a unique energy and determination. Chisholm Jr., originally from the Bahamas, is eager to represent Great Britain once again, having last played for them as an 18-year-old in the 2016 World Baseball Classic qualifiers. “It feels great,” Chisholm Jr. stated. “I was trying to put [the jersey] back on three years ago, but wasn’t able to. Now that I am able to wear it again, it feels good, putting on the GB uniform and going out there and playing in the WBC.”

Adding to Great Britain’s pitching depth is Michael Petersen, who made waves in the 2023 Classic by striking out Nolan Arenado. Petersen has since made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has also pitched for the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins.

What’s at Stake?

Mexico is looking to build on their impressive 2023 run, where they reached the semifinals and came close to upsetting eventual champion Japan. The team is hungry for a championship and determined to go all the way. Great Britain, meanwhile, is aiming to establish themselves as a consistent contender on the international stage. This game represents a significant opportunity for both teams to make a statement early in the tournament.

Head-to-Head History

This will be the first-ever World Baseball Classic matchup between Great Britain and Mexico. Great Britain’s limited experience in the Classic – this being only their second appearance – adds an element of unpredictability to the game.
