Shohei Ohtani: The Electrician Who Struck Out a Superstar and Czechia’s WBC Journey
Czech electrician Ondrej Satoria made a triumphant return to the World Baseball Classic (WBC) against Australia, three years after achieving baseball immortality by striking out Los Angeles Dodgers and MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani. The moment, a shocking upset, has become a defining memory for both players and a source of national pride for the Czech Republic.
Satoria, who balances his passion for baseball with his profession as an electrician, first captured headlines in 2023 when he struck out Ohtani on just three pitches. The final pitch, a 72.1 mph changeup, drew an awkward swing from one of the game’s most dominant players, a two-time World Series champion. Despite ultimately losing the game 10-2, Satoria’s feat was unforgettable.
“It’s like the peak of my career,” Satoria told The Japan Times in 2024, reflecting on the strikeout. “But I have to be honest, in that moment, I didn’t realize that it was him. I’m just thinking about the hitter.” He described the pitch as a mistake, spiking it in the dirt, and was surprised when Ohtani swung. “It was pure happiness for me.”
Satoria’s Return and Czechia’s Performance
Fast forward to the recent WBC matchup against Australia, where Satoria pitched a scoreless 3 2/3 innings of relief, adding three strikeouts to his resume. While the Czech team ultimately fell 5-1, they demonstrated resilience and a growing presence on the international stage. Second baseman Vojtech Mensik provided an early lead with a first-inning run.
Despite the loss, Czech manager Pavel Chadim remained optimistic. “Today, we had seven scoreless innings,” Chadim stated. “We were close to having eight scoreless innings… We didn’t have a double play, and without that double play, you don’t have such a big chance to win.” He emphasized the team’s progress, stating, “It’s not easy to be amateurs, to be from Europe and play with the best guys in the world.”
The Impact of the 2023 WBC and Future Growth
Chadim also reflected on the significance of the Czech Republic’s inaugural WBC appearance in 2023. The team felt immense support from Japan and the broader baseball community, which has fueled the sport’s growth within the country. “Three years ago after WBC 2023, it was something amazing,” Chadim said. “We feel the support from Japan, from NPB, from Mr. Hideki Kuriyama. We feel like a younger brother. We feel supported, we feel protected, and it has sped up our baseball [development.]”
Ohtani himself acknowledged the memorable encounter, requesting a Czech jersey signed by Satoria and his teammates. This gesture highlights the sportsmanship and respect that define the game, even amidst fierce competition.
Ondrej Satoria’s story is a testament to the unpredictable nature of baseball and the power of a single moment. It’s a story that continues to inspire, showcasing the potential for underdogs to shine on the world’s biggest stage.
