Utah Hiking Trail Murders: Manhunt Ends with Arrest in Colorado

The breathtaking landscapes of Utah’s canyons and national parks became the scene of a horrific tragedy when authorities in Torrey responded to a desperate call from two men who discovered the bodies of their wives. The women, friends who had embarked on a hike earlier that Wednesday afternoon, never returned.

This gruesome discovery quickly escalated into a wider investigation, leading to the identification of a third victim – an elderly woman found deceased in a nearby town. The incident triggered a massive manhunt spanning several states and prompted a two-day closure of schools in Wayne County, Utah.

Suspect Apprehended After Multi-State Chase

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Ivan Miller of Blakesburg, Iowa, was apprehended on Thursday after a stolen vehicle belonging to one of the victims was tracked across southern Utah, into northern Arizona, and finally into Colorado, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS). Miller now faces three counts of first-degree aggravated murder.

Court documents reveal Miller allegedly confessed to the killings, citing financial motives as the driving force behind his actions. Investigators have stated he appeared to have no prior connection to the victims or the area. (Source: CNN)

A Community in Shock

The tragedy initially baffled law enforcement, as the motive and connection between Miller and the victims remained unclear. Wayne County, a sparsely populated area of approximately 2,500 residents located 200 miles south of Salt Lake City, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Fishlake National Forest.

The initial call to authorities came on Wednesday afternoon, reporting “two deceased females located on a hiking trail.” Bullet casings and shotgun shells were discovered at the trailhead, according to court records.

The investigation subsequently led to the discovery of a third victim at a residence in Wayne County. Authorities have withheld the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

Details of the Crimes

Prior to the killings near Torrey, Miller is accused of murdering an elderly woman in her home in Lyman, Utah, approximately 15 miles away. He reportedly stayed in the victim’s shed before entering her home while she was out. According to court documents, Miller waited for her return and shot her in the back of the head while she was watching television.

He then allegedly attempted to conceal the crime by moving the victim’s body to a cellar beneath the shed. Miller subsequently stole her vehicle and drove to the trailhead where he encountered and fatally shot the two other women, both in their 30s and 40s. The indictment states he stabbed one of the women in the chest when she showed signs of life after being shot.

Miller is also accused of stealing the women’s credit cards and using one to purchase gasoline. He fled the scene in the stolen Subaru, which was later tracked using a vehicle monitoring app.

Apprehension and Aftermath

The vehicle was eventually abandoned in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where Miller was taken into custody without incident. He was found to be in possession of a handgun and a large knife. Authorities have confirmed there are no ongoing threats to the public.

The Utah State Bureau of Investigation and the Utah Crime Lab are currently processing the crime scenes to gather further evidence. Miller remains detained in Colorado and is awaiting extradition to Utah. He has been assigned a public defender and is scheduled for a court hearing on Friday afternoon.

The manhunt prompted lockdowns and closures of homes, businesses, and schools throughout the region. Wayne County School District announced it would remain closed for the rest of the week, with counseling services available for students upon their return.

Torrey Mayor Mickey Wright expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and praised the coordinated efforts of law enforcement. He emphasized the community’s resilience and commitment to supporting one another during this difficult time.

This is a developing story.
