Quebec has lost a musical giant. Jacques Michel, celebrated singer-songwriter, passed away at the age of 84. His prolific career spanned decades, leaving behind a remarkable discography of over 200 compositions, including timeless classics like “Amène-toi chez nous” and “Un nouveau jour va se lever.”

Michel’s music resonated across generations, with more than 30 of his songs reaching the top of French-Canadian charts between 1960 and 2005. His 19th and final album, Tenir, released in the fall of 2019, arrived 54 years after his debut, Jacques Michel… et ses chansons, proving his enduring passion for creating.

A Voice for Sovereignty and Social Change

Beyond his musical talent, Jacques Michel was a committed artist. He actively identified with the Quebec sovereignty movement during the politically charged 1970s, using his songwriting as a platform for his beliefs. He participated in the iconic “Poèmes et chants de la résistance” concert series (1968, 1971, and 1973), opening with his powerful anthem, “Un nouveau jour va se lever,” in the aftermath of the October Crisis.

Born in Abitibi-Témiscamingue in 1941, Michel’s musical journey began early. He penned his first lyrics at the age of eight for a school performance. “That’s when I first tasted applause,” he recalled in a 2025 interview with Radio-Canada. “The need for recognition was fulfilled. I knew this was something I had to do.”

From Rock ‘n’ Roll to Solo Success

While his path wasn’t always linear – he briefly enlisted in the army at 15 – his musical calling proved irresistible. He traded his uniform for a microphone and guitar, joining the bands Rock’n’roll Kids and Midnighters in the Estrie region. In 1963, he launched his solo career after securing his first contract.

His breakthrough came in 1965, winning the “Révélation de l’année” (Revelation of the Year) award at the Festival du disque. The 1970s marked a period of prolific output, releasing nine albums and consistently charting hits like “Chacun son refrain,” “Pas besoin de frapper pour entrer,” “Allume mes lumières,” and “Amène-toi chez nous.” The latter even earned him the Grand Prix at the Spa Festival in Belgium.

Beyond Music: Television and Sailing

In 1984, Michel temporarily stepped away from music to explore television, co-creating the beloved children’s shows Le village de Nathalie and Sur la rue Tabaga with his then-partner, Ève Déziel. These shows captivated Quebec audiences for three and six years respectively.

His life took another unexpected turn at 49 when he embarked on a global sailing adventure. He described sailing as demanding “rigor, determination, and discipline,” even crossing the Atlantic in 2012.

A Resurgence and Lasting Legacy

Michel’s songs experienced a revival in the early 2000s, thanks to artists like Julie Arel and Sylvain Cossette. In 2004, his hit “Un nouveau jour va se lever” was chosen as the theme song for the popular reality show Star Académie, and Wilfred LeBouthillier revived “Amène-toi chez nous” the previous year. He returned to the stage in 2004 with a triumphant performance at Place des Arts in Montreal during the FrancoFolies.

In 2015, he released Un nouveau jour, a compilation of re-arranged hits, and embarked on a 40-show tour. His final album of original songs since 1982 was released in 2019. His last tour, “Seul à Seuls,” began in 2024, but was cut short in July 2025 due to illness.

Jacques Michel’s contributions were widely recognized. He was named a Knight of the National Order of Quebec in 2007 and received the Sylvain-Lelièvre Award from the Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec (SPACQ) in 2020 for his lifetime achievements. His legacy as a Quebec musical icon will undoubtedly endure.
