Keith Olbermann Controversy: Outrage After Comments on Lou Holtz’s Death

Keith Olbermann Faces Backlash for Comments on Lou Holtz

Former ESPN broadcaster Keith Olbermann ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media Wednesday after referring to the late, legendary Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz as a “legendary scumbag” following the announcement of his death at age 89. Olbermann’s post on X (formerly Twitter) was a response to a clip of Holtz criticizing President Joe Biden’s stance on abortion rights in 2020.

The comment immediately drew widespread condemnation. Users on X responded with harsh rebukes, with one stating, “You’re a scumbag that needs mental help,” and another adding, “Lou Holtz had more class, integrity, and genuine decency in his pinky finger than you’ll ever show in your lifetime.” A third user described Olbermann as “a grumpy, lonely, Godless man.”

A Pattern of Controversial Statements

This isn’t an isolated incident for Olbermann. He has a history of sharing politically charged and often combative statements on social media, frequently resulting in significant backlash. Previously, he criticized the U.S. men’s hockey team for accepting an invitation to the State of the Union address under President Trump, labeling those who attended as exhibiting “indelible stupidity and misogyny.” He praised the women’s team for declining the invitation.

In January, Olbermann targeted former University of Kentucky swimmer Kaitlynn Wheeler for celebrating a women’s rights rally concerning transgender athletes in women’s sports, dismissing her achievements as stemming from a lack of athletic talent. In 2025, he faced further criticism for a deleted post directed at CNN contributor Scott Jennings following an incident involving conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

Lou Holtz’s Legacy and Political Affiliations

Lou Holtz was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, famously stating in February 2024 that Trump needed to “coach America back to greatness!” He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump shortly after Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Following Holtz’s death, numerous GOP figures, including Senators Tommy Tuberville, Todd Young, Tom Cotton, and Lindsey Graham, along with several Representatives and Governors, paid tribute to the coach. Notably, prominent Democratic leaders remained largely silent on Holtz’s passing, including those with backgrounds in football.

This silence has also drawn attention, with observers noting that figures like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Senator Cory Booker, and Representatives Colin Allred and Kam Buckner have not publicly acknowledged Holtz’s death.
