Travis Bazzana Leads Australia to Victory in World Baseball Classic
Brent Maguire and Travis Bazzana truly delivered for Australia in their opening game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, securing a decisive 3-0 win against Chinese Taipei. Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 Draft and currently ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 20 prospect, showcased his immense talent with a stunning solo home run and a crucial single at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.
Bazzana’s Impactful Performance
After a solid single in his second at-bat, Travis Bazzana launched a Statcast-projected 383-foot home run in the seventh inning, extending Australia’s lead to 3-0. This performance was particularly meaningful for Bazzana, who was born in Hornsby, Australia, before honing his skills at Oregon State University. His dominant collegiate career culminated in being selected first overall in the ‘24 Draft by the Cleveland Guardians.
The young second baseman is now demonstrating his potential on the world stage, and baseball fans eagerly anticipate his likely debut with Cleveland this season. His performance is a testament to the growing talent coming out of the Australian baseball system.
A Team Effort
While Travis Bazzana stole the spotlight, Australia’s victory was a complete team effort. Catcher Robbie Perkins ignited the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run. Perkins, a seasoned player with six years in the Minors with the Rockies system (2013-18), has since become a mainstay in the Australian Baseball League.
Dominant Pitching Performance
Three runs proved to be more than enough for Australia’s remarkably dominant pitching staff. They limited Chinese Taipei to just three hits and two walks, while racking up an impressive nine strikeouts in a shutout victory.
- Alex Wells, a former big-leaguer with 13 appearances for the Orioles (2021-22), struck out six batters and allowed no hits across three scoreless innings. He even achieved a remarkable streak of five consecutive strikeouts, tying for the third-most in a WBC game (according to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs).
- Left-hander Jack O’Loughlin continued the momentum with three scoreless innings of his own. O’Loughlin also has MLB experience, having appeared in four games for the A’s in 2024 and pitching for the Rockies’ Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes last season.
- Jon Kennedy, another left-hander, closed out the game with three more scoreless innings, solidifying Australia’s pivotal win.
What’s Next?
Australia will next face Czechia on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on FS1. Chinese Taipei will then take on the defending champion Japan on Friday at 5 a.m. ET, also on FS1. The early success of Travis Bazzana and the Australian team has certainly set the stage for an exciting tournament.
