Seth MacFarlane: The Orville Season 4 Update & Future Projects

Seth MacFarlane Hints at a Potential Revival of ‘The Orville’

Seth MacFarlane, currently promoting the second season of his Peacock series Ted, has provided an encouraging update for fans of his sci-fi series, The Orville. The show, which initially aired on Fox before moving to Hulu, may be closer to a return than previously thought.

Season Four Scripts Are Complete

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MacFarlane revealed that the writing team has completed scripts for a potential fourth season, totaling 10 episodes. “I will be honest with you: Season four is written,” MacFarlane stated. “It’s just a question of when we have the time to produce it.”

Scheduling Conflicts and Hulu’s Readiness

While Hulu is reportedly ready to move forward with the new season, MacFarlane’s busy schedule presents a significant hurdle. “The 10 scripts are done,” he explained. “I’m the problem. It’s [a matter of] when I can make that my year, with all the other stuff we have in the works. But we can hit the ground running when it happens.”

A Look Back at ‘The Orville’

The Orville, set in the 25th century, premiered in 2017 and follows the adventures of the crew of the USS Orville, led by Captain Ed Mercer, played by MacFarlane. The series boasts a talented cast including Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Jessica Szohr, and Anne Winters.

Past Challenges and Future Prospects

Back in 2022, MacFarlane expressed hope for a continuation of the series, despite expired cast contracts and budgetary concerns. He acknowledged the show’s ambitious budget, stating, “It’s not an inexpensive show to produce. It requires an ambitious budget. But the flip side of that is, it’s no more ambitious than half the other streaming shows on television.” He emphasized that the show’s future would depend on audience response and discovery.

Recent Updates and Cast Availability

In a recent conversation, MacFarlane remained coy but affirmed that the show hasn’t been officially cancelled. However, Adrianne Palicki, who played Cmdr. Kelly Grayson, has indicated she is unlikely to return due to scheduling difficulties and the lengthy production breaks between seasons. She noted the challenges of making herself available given the time it took MacFarlane to write the scripts.

Despite these challenges, the fact that a full season of scripts exists offers a glimmer of hope for fans eager to see the adventures of the USS Orville continue. Stay tuned for further updates on the future of The Orville.
