Former Russian Senator and businessman, Umar Dzhabrailov, has died in Moscow, according to multiple reports from Russian news agencies. Sources at RT, REN TV, and RBC initially broke the news, which was subsequently confirmed by law enforcement officials to Interfax.

Details of the Incident

“Dzhabrailov took his own life in his Moscow apartment,” an Interfax source stated. His death was also confirmed by his former lawyer, as reported by TASS. RIA Novosti reported that law enforcement officials found the businessman with a gunshot wound to the head in his Moscow apartment, and he later died in the hospital.

Telegram channel Mash reported that Dzhabrailov was hospitalized around 2:00 AM in critical condition. Doctors attempted to revive him for at least half an hour, but were unsuccessful. Mash initially reported the incident occurred in a hotel, where he was identified by his security detail.

A Look at Umar Dzhabrailov’s Life and Career

Born in Grozny in 1958, Umar Dzhabrailov rose to prominence in the Russian business world. In 1997, he became a top manager at Plaza Group, which managed prominent shopping centers such as Okhotny Ryad and Smolensky Passage, as well as the Hotel Rossiya and other key properties.

Dzhabrailov served as a representative of Chechnya in the Federation Council from 2004 to 2009, holding the position of Deputy Chairman of the SF Committee on International Affairs. He later served as an advisor to Sergei Prikhodko, an assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, from 2009 to 2013.

Controversy and Party Exclusion

In December 2017, Dzhabrailov was expelled from the United Russia party “for actions discrediting the party and harming its political interests.” This followed an incident involving a public disturbance.
