Greyhound Bus Theft: Kansas City Man Causes Thousands in Damages
A Kansas City man, Preston R. Reiff, has been charged with multiple offenses following a shocking incident involving the theft of a Greyhound bus. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, resulted in an estimated $75,000+ in damages before Reiff was apprehended by authorities.
The Theft and Initial Damage
According to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson, Reiff is charged with stealing, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, and first-degree property damage. The drama unfolded at a Greyhound bus station when an employee and witness reported the theft of a Greyhound/Jefferson bus around 10:20 p.m. Court documents reveal that Reiff immediately caused significant damage upon leaving the station’s back lot, striking a wall, ramming an automatic gate, and hitting multiple signs.
High-Speed Pursuit and Apprehension
Thanks to GPS tracking, law enforcement quickly located the stolen Greyhound bus traveling north on Interstate 29 near Northwest 56th Street. Kansas City Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop, but Reiff refused to comply. The pursuit continued into Platte County, where authorities deployed stop sticks near I-29 and Northwest Tiffany Springs Parkway. The suspect finally pulled over after both front tires were disabled.
Investigation and Suspect’s Statements
Following his arrest, Reiff underwent field sobriety tests, which indicated he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He also stated he wasn’t under a doctor’s care or taking any medications. However, when questioned about the incident, Reiff invoked his right to an attorney and declined to discuss the matter further.
Extent of the Damages
The financial toll of Reiff’s actions is substantial. Damages include approximately $15,000 to the station wall, $40,000 to the automatic gate, and $500 per damaged sign. The Greyhound bus itself, originally valued at $600,000, sustained further damage that is still being assessed. This incident highlights the potential for significant financial repercussions associated with vehicle theft and property destruction.
