Ryan Gosling: From Franchise Avoider to Star Wars Lead – What Changed?

Ryan Gosling Enters the Galaxy Far, Far Away

For years, the name Ryan Gosling has been tossed around for iconic franchise roles. Could he be the next Batman? Superman? Adam Warlock? Ghost Rider? Yet, the Oscar-nominated star of Barbie and Blade Runner 2049 consistently steered clear of these commitments. A defining characteristic of his career has been his refusal to revisit the same character, a practice he’s maintained remarkably well. However, that may be about to change in 2027.

In 2027, Gosling will headline Star Wars: Starfighter, the first Star Wars film set after The Rise of Skywalker. Directed by Shawn Levy (known for Deadpool & Wolverine), the film features Gosling as an experienced mentor figure to a younger character played by Flynn Gray. While currently positioned as a standalone story, unconnected to the broader Star Wars saga, its success could easily alter that trajectory.

A Dual Space Odyssey: ‘Project Hail Mary’ and ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’

Before venturing into the Star Wars universe, Gosling stars in another space-faring adventure, Project Hail Mary, hitting theaters on March 20th. In this Andy Weir adaptation (author of The Martian), Gosling portrays Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher thrust into a critical mission to save Earth.

During an interview with io9 regarding Project Hail Mary, the conversation naturally turned to his upcoming role in Star Wars: Starfighter. The question on everyone’s mind: what prompted this shift, considering his long-standing avoidance of large franchises?

Why Now? Gosling on Joining the Star Wars Universe

“It was Shawn’s enthusiasm and his vision and the script,” Gosling explained to io9. “And I just avoided these things because they never felt right. And I’m glad I did because I feel like, [similar to] a book like this, [it was] worth waiting for. And it is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

This sentiment echoes his approach to roles in films like Barbie, Blade Runner 2049, and now Project Hail Mary – projects that offer unique creative challenges. The crucial question remains: will Star Wars: Starfighter remain a one-time venture, or will Gosling break his pattern and reprise the role in future installments?

Only time will tell. But if the film lives up to expectations, the possibility of a return seems increasingly likely.

Project Hail Mary opens March 20th. Gosling’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Starfighter is slated for release on May 28, 2027.
