Yannick Hanfmann Advances to Chilean Open Semifinals, Sets Rematch with Cerundolo

Santiago, Chile – Yannick Hanfmann is making waves at the BCI Seguros Chile Open, securing his place in the semifinals after a hard-fought victory against Lithuanian lucky loser Vilius Gaubas. The German battled to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in a match lasting two hours and 13 minutes, becoming the first German to reach an ATP Tour semi-final on South American clay since Tommy Haas in Sao Paulo in 2014.

Hanfmann’s journey to the semifinals hasn’t been easy, but his resilience and adaptability have shone through. He will now face a familiar opponent: top seed Francisco Cerundolo. This marks a rematch of their 2023 Santiago encounter, where Cerundolo emerged victorious.

Cerundolo Continues Dominance

Francisco Cerundolo continued his impressive run on South American clay, dispatching American Emilio Nava 6-1, 6-1 in a dominant performance lasting just 66 minutes. The Argentine is chasing his second title of the ‘Golden Swing’ season, having already claimed victory in Buenos Aires earlier this month. He boasts a 7-1 record on South American clay this season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

“I didn’t expect this,” Cerundolo commented after his swift win. “I have seen Emilio play really good tennis the past couple of days, so I started super concentrated on my game because I knew it was going to be a really tough match. But I thought I played really well. I rarely missed any shots today. I am really happy with my performance.”

With this win, Cerundolo reached a significant milestone, becoming the first active Argentine player to achieve 150 tour-level wins. He’s eager to add to that number, stating, “It is a lot. Not many players can achieve 150 wins, so I am super happy with that milestone. I will try to achieve more, set more records and try to keep winning.”

Darderi and Baez Also Advance

Second seed Luciano Darderi also secured his spot in the semifinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Andrea Pellegrino. Darderi has been in excellent form on clay, boasting a 14-2 record since last July at the tour level.

He will face third seed Sebastian Baez, who defeated home favorite Alejandro Tabilo 7-6(2), 6-1 in a rematch of the 2024 final. Baez holds the tournament record for most match wins in Santiago with 15, and is aiming to become the first player to win two titles at the ATP 250 event.

The stage is set for exciting semi-final clashes in Santiago, with Cerundolo vs. Hanfmann and Darderi vs. Baez promising thrilling tennis action. You can find more information about the ATP Tour at ATP Tour Official Website.
