Michael J. Fox: The Heartfelt Inspiration Behind Harrison Ford’s ‘Shrinking’ Performance

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed series, “Shrinking,” created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, has garnered Emmy nominations for its honest and moving depiction of life with Parkinson’s disease. The storyline of therapist Paul Rhoades, brilliantly portrayed by Harrison Ford, resonates deeply with audiences. But the emotional core of the show, particularly a pivotal scene in Season 2, stems from a deeply personal source: the experiences of Michael J. Fox.

A Real Conversation, A Powerful Scene

Ted McGinley, Ford’s co-star, recently revealed that the scene where Rhoades openly discusses the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s with his friends and colleagues was directly inspired by a conversation Michael J. Fox had with his “Spin City” castmates regarding his medication management. McGinley recounted to Rich Eisen that Fox explained the necessity of conserving his medication.

“He had to save it. He couldn’t use it for rehearsals…” McGinley shared. “He had to save it for his life, for his family, and that was sort of Harrison’s speech.” Fox articulated the feeling of diminishing returns with medication, stating, “I can feel myself atrophying. I’m safe here, so I’m not going to take this medication. I can only take so much because it’s the law of diminishing returns.”

Navigating Parkinson’s on ‘Spin City’

Throughout his time on “Spin City,” Fox carefully managed his medication to control symptoms during live tapings. He made the difficult decision to leave the show in 2000, shortly after publicly disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis, to prioritize his family and dedicate himself to finding a cure. While treatments exist to manage Parkinson’s symptoms, their effectiveness can wane as the disease progresses.

Bill Lawrence, also the creator of “Spin City,” drew upon this poignant conversation when crafting Rhoades’ monologue in the Season 2 finale. Rhoades confesses, “I didn’t take my pills because I want to save them for when I really need them, not to hide from you.”

Harrison Ford’s Moving Portrayal and Michael J. Fox’s Reaction

Michael J. Fox, who returned to acting this year with guest appearances in the third season of “Shrinking,” was profoundly moved by Ford’s performance. He told Vanity Fair, “That’s one thing that’s amazing about Harrison. He doesn’t have Parkinson’s, but he’s a brilliant actor. I don’t have to convince him I have Parkinson’s, but he had to convince me he had Parkinson’s. What I wasn’t prepared for was how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it. I mean, I recognized Parkinson’s in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself…”

A Personal Connection for the Writers

The inspiration doesn’t stop with Fox’s experience. Co-creator Brett Goldstein revealed that Ford’s character was also influenced by his own father’s battle with Parkinson’s, a detail he initially kept private. He shared with Seth Meyers that his father’s reaction to the revelation was wonderfully nonchalant: “Are you telling everyone that I’m Harrison Ford?’ And I said, ‘Yeah,’ and he went, ‘F—ing cool. Go for it. Please, go for it.’”

Season 3 of “Shrinking” is currently streaming on Apple TV+, offering a compelling and emotionally resonant exploration of grief, healing, and the challenges of living with Parkinson’s disease. The series stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring legacy of Michael J. Fox’s courage and advocacy.
