A moderate earthquake was felt across Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and several other regions of the country earlier today. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported the quake registered a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The tremor was experienced around 1:52 PM local time. Farzana Sultana, an assistant meteorologist, informed The Daily Star that the epicenter was located 188 kilometers southwest of Dhaka, in the Satkhira district.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly lower magnitude of 5.3 at the epicenter. According to the USGS, the quake’s origin was 26 kilometers southeast of Taki, India, and occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers.

While initial reports suggest no major damage or casualties, authorities are continuing to assess the situation. Residents reported feeling a significant shaking sensation, prompting many to evacuate buildings. The shallow depth of the earthquake contributed to the widespread feeling of the tremor.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Bangladesh, as the country lies in a seismically active zone. Understanding earthquake preparedness and safety measures is crucial for residents.
